Based on experience on other forums, its potentially handy for spam posters. Fortunately, we have an awesome mod team and don't really see any of that.

I am having trouble finding the thread below when i search for it with the forum's search function. Even when i narrow the search by the user who crewted the thread i don't see it. Any ideas?

Major suggestion: do away with password protecting areas, make it user group or individual user permissions.
Reason: tapatalk and forum runner don't handle password protected forums, because the forums need a cookie in that app to show the password was ok'd, and for those of us that're mostly mobile now, we're locked out of parts of the site we might otherwise have access to.

it should be easy, for example, the veterans area, make a user group named vets, and add people that're vets to that group, and give it the same as normal users except it's got the ability to view and post in the veterans area, the "cave" which was recently set as passworded, same, for users that were already hanging out there, make a "cavepeople" group or something like that... I haven't admin'd a vbullitin board but, I know in SMF and PHPBB it's very simple...if it's a total PITA on here I understand obviously...but, it'd be an easy solution to the same thing (user access control) that keeps peeps out of areas they shouldn't be (regardless of if they have a password) and gives the same experience across all browsers and mobile apps....

Look on post #2 on the secret santa address forum....the forum is closed off to public and those with the red username only have access to it. I believe its just temporary til after Christmas.
