Are gas prices making you drive your Xterra less?

I commute to school 2 days a week, down from the 5 days a week last semester. But, with the $0.50 increase in 2 weeks, the prices have me looking for a small car for commuting and excessive driving. Normally they wouldn't bother me, but they do when I am trying to save money. I guess it also won't help when I put on my 2" BL. Although, I didn't lose any MPG's after my 3" SL and 32" tires.

FYI: Prices are $3.79 here (cheapest) and $3.99 (most expensive).

The gas prices have made me lighten up the pressure that my right foot exerts on that long, skinny pedal on the right. I have a 40mi commute one-way to school twice a week, plus driving all over Creation for clinicals, so I'm now running at about 3000RPM instead of 3500 like I used to. Sure, I've had to leave a little earlier, but the 8mph difference has helped my fuel mileage. Definitely made me more aware of my fuel consumption. I wish I had time to teach my girlfriend how to drive my truck so that I can drive her Civic, but we just don't have that kind of time. At this point, by the time she learns how, I'll be done with school and it won't matter anymore.

My wife has 'forced' me to drive her 2003 Lancer while she's been on maternity; 52 mi drive round trip. I've told her that I need to drive it to my tower once a week (116 mi round trip) because I'm not going to get her car stuck out there. It's kinda fun driving it, but I miss the vantage point of the X. I'll probably get the same treatment this summer when she's done teaching.

nope, it hasn't slowed me down at all, I'm actually fine with the price increase, it's not that bad....gas here is only 3.29 at the cheap stations which actually have good gas so, I'm used to filling there.

$3.69 where I fill up, my drive to work is only 16 miles round-trip (unless I go the long way, then it's about 34). I don't know what my mileage is exactly, but I know I could use a tune up.

So far it hasn't made me change my driving habits too much, other than avoiding the highway and using my cruise control whenever possible. I still take the long way to work because it's a more comfortable ride. The short way is a lot of rough, un-maintained back roads that are starting to tear my truck apart. If I'm running late I'll take the 16 mile drive and just baby the X over the rough spots.

I have started thinking about riding my bike (bicycle) to work once spring hits. I need to get back into shape first though, and get some more pavement-friendly tires on the bike. DH tires on pavement offer up way too much resistance and weight, haha.

gas buddy says I'm averaging 14.6mpg. I usually get about 140 til I hit the half tank...then it drops fast for some reason. About 200 when the gas light comes on. Which I have no idea how many gallons you have left when it comes on.

So, you're saying that I should be happy that I am getting between 250 and 290 miles per tank? Especially since I tend to drive rather aggressively?

Meh ..... if I was worried about the fuel prices I would have never modded the truck and killed the anemic to begin with fuel mileage. Currently I average just at 16 mpg around town and round trip to work is 12 miles.

I am wondering how much my mileage will suffer with my 33" tires and 2" BL in addition to my 3" SL.

It won't be what it is now that's for sure. :D As I said above mine gets right at 16 with 33"s, 2" BL, 3" SL, 4.6 gearing, automatic trans, just shy of 300 lbs of armor, and say another 200 lbs of gear in the back. I also have headers, catback, E-fan, all synthetic fluids, drive very carefully, and have gutted anything in the truck I don't need. Rear seats, rear seats seat belts, stock tire holder, harmonic weights on the frame, and any bracket that used to hold something but no longer do are gone. All these things help to counter the additional weight from armor and the worsened aerodynamics from the lifts.

With the mods you have listed above and depending on the state of tune of the truck I would guess between 12 to 15 mpg.

I can deal with that. That would be about 2 mpg less than what it's at now. Thanks for the enlightenment!

I'm only 12 mi round trip to work 4 days/wk, so not a huge impact for me commuting. Gas around $3.35 right now.

If we go anywhere of distance, we take the Altima as it gets double the mileage of the X (def taking Altima to Vegas for NASCAR race, 1000mi rd trip).

I only drive the f350 when it absolutely needs to go, as diesel is about $4.

Still doesn't discourage taking the X on all the desert excursions every couple of weeks. That's what it's for!

Our gas is approx. $3.55 a gal of regular. With my 33' MT's and my 26 mile one way commute usually a round trip runs me 1/3 a tank maybe a little less. Once the beast is paid off this summer/fall I will def. be getting a more fuel efficient vehicle. I'm looking for a newer Outback Sport or Impreza WRX, my only stipulation is that I want a manual again. I miss driving a manual.

That would be around 11mpg.:D

I bought a commuting car for this very reason. Granted I realise most people do not have that option. (I actually bought my parents a new car and gave it to them in exchange for their old worn out one.) Gas is about $3.29 here as well, up to about $3.35 or so. I commute about 15-20mi one way and yes prices are killer (considering this is expensive for us).
