The passing of a beloved pet

With the heaviest of a heart I can bear, I'm so saddened to report my best buddy co-pilot for the last 10 years is with us no longer, as of a week ago tomorrow.
Maxx met his untimely end via an unknown vehicle out on a state road just a bit from my house.
Circumstances are unknown and how/why can only be guessed at.

Quite odd, since he's never been a dog to wander or leave. He's always watched where his family was at all times and stayed with us. Wouldn't stray outside his yard even if a gate or door was left open... One advantage of getting him so young I guess.

Maxx was a well traveled member of the family, traveling pretty much over all of the N-W US on camping trips in the RV or on explorations in the Xterra.
ABSOLUTELY loved to go in the X with us. If I was loading some gear or supplies into the rig, he would either set beside or inside the entire time until we left. Loved to GO!!

With my side business of bumpers, he know the drill on Thursdays & Fridays, doing all my pickups & deliveries from the powdercoater or to FedEx and would wait under the truck to go.

So smart, well-mannered and understanding of words and commands. Just a pleasure to always have him around, and the emptiness we all feel from missing him and his presence every moment of the day is so tough to take. :weep:

He's buried out in the back pasture under a blue spruce with his predecessor, a red-heeler named Sidney, who was the first dog my wife and I got just after we married.

Had a few of the cattle dog breed over the years, and will probably get another one, as we've not been without for the last 22 years or so. Got my eye on about a 10 week rescue red hler right now. So strange that I hadn't even considered another one now in the shape we're in, and I suddenly got a strange urge to look locally, and he was my first hit on the web search??

Just amazing how much you love them and become attached to them.

So deeply and greatly missed and loved.
See you again on the other side someday...

Best wishes to your family and you for your loss. Dogs are indeed integral members of one's family and their untimely loss is even more heartfelt. Maxx is now over the rainbow bridge eternally riding in X's and doing what he loves best. :)

Heartbreaking loss.

Sincere condolences...like Mel said, pets (especially dogs) are a part of the family.

Non judging, loyal, unconditional human companions....a persons best friend for sure.

Well.
A little over a week gone by.
Wife and I both still feel pretty bad at times.
Don't know how many times I've went to leave and almost called or whistled for him to go.
Really sad to see how much in each day your dog is part of it.

That being said, I finally got brave to go get the new pup, Rusty.

Quite a handful, and he brings back the memories of how much work it is to train one to the level of the last few I've had.

Lotta fun but lotta work too.

Now the occasional cat we have isn't around too much, so the wife is sad about that too.
Told her the cat will be fine, and be hanging around more once it gets cold again as always.

Puppy! Wow, you certainly will have your hands full. But awww, cute adorable fuzzy puppies are totally worth all the work. :)

So sorry to hear about your loss. I can tell your buddy was really loved just by the words in your post. While you cannot compare a pet to a child they do become a big part of our family and affect our every day lives.I'm glad you took the step to getting another dog. A home just isn't a home without one.
About 2 weeks ago my sons dog passed unexpectedly. He was a beagle and was only 6 years old. Losing Jake was tough but seeing my son with such a broken heart was a little more then I could take. He finally decided over the weekend he needed another buddy so we went and picked one out. She will never replace Jake but will definately fill the void in his heart.
