Chixterra's build

Well that does put a damper on the SAS, but I'm sure they'll look sweet with a SAS.

These are going to give the X a really wide stance...

My buddy brought the Swampers home yesterday, and I stopped breifly to see them this morning. Good googly moogly, those things are monsterous. They're mounted on 12" wide rims right now, which in part decreases their height and enhances the width. I am going to get them mounted on 15x10 steelies, which will increase the height a bit. They're in pretty good shape, and have lots of tread since they were only used off-road. There is a bit of rock chunking, but that isn't a big deal. And the Xterra will be WIDE when those are on!

i didn't see if you have lockers yet, but I'm sure you don't have them yet due to the coming SAS. When you do finish the SAS what kind of lockers will you be running?

The rear will likely be a Yukon Grizzly, and I keep tossing back and forth between the Grizzly, Eaton, or Yukon Zip Locker, for the front.

Those will probably be bought later this month, or early next month.

Planing on any kind of transfer case mods? Doubler.... Atlas etc? Might be nice ordering the custom driveshafts once and done. Looks like a interesting build been secretly following for a while. ;)
SAS might be in my future once I get a daily driver.

Not at this time, Ben. I'd like to do it all at once, but any T-case alteration is going to be expensive. Down the road I will probably upgrade the gearing to the Calmini stuff.

The SAS will be my daily driver for a little bit, at least till I can find a decent used car.

RuffStuff Specialties is having a Father's Day sale, so I took advantage of a little savings to order my SOA kit for the rear axle, and shock tabs for the front axle. I am in the process of talking with Calmini to see if there is a way to buy their items separately.

Man I love working with ruffstuff. Super high quality parts that are universal. Its like getting a box of legos as a kid, the oppertunities to mod are endless. Definitly watching this build. Has my interest.

You certainly have that right, Ben. The stuff I received today is probably some of the best metal products I have ever seen. I wish some of the other Nissan distributors and fabricators made stuff that was this good.

On another note, here is a small list I made of things I need, minus the RuffStuff items. The total cost is reflecting that RuffStuff items being removed as well. It is a bit more sobering. Not added into this list are: the Radius Arm mounts, the DOM needed for the trailing arm/panhard mount, the rear shocks, and my headers and new exhaust.

When you get all your parts I'd like to do a special SAS thread with the costs and parts list like you have done.. I think it would give people a great idea on the mod

I went ahead and ordered up the Ring and Pinion, install kit, and differential cover for the Dana 44. I was going to order the steering kit, but decided to hold onto the extra money for now.

I have found a few ways to save a buck or two: for the rear axle, I was originally going to convert it from drum to disc. Cyclemut talked me out of that. The drums on the Ford 9" axle are massive, and then I'd also need to buy a new M/C (one made for 4 wheel disc brakes). So I decided to stay with the drums. Instead of purchasing the drum re-build kit from Bronco Graveyard, I got a hookup on some parts from my buddy who works at Carquest. A few of the parts I found even cheaper on Rockauto, so I already ordered those. Also, I did some shopping around for the ring and pinion for the D44. Randy's Ring and Pinion had it the most expensive, Broncograveyard 2nd, and Complete Offroad had them beat by $18. The ring and pinion install kits are usually somewhat expensive, and I didn't need to get a whole axle rebuild kit to the tune of $250+. I just needed the carrier bearings, shims, etc. Broncograveyard offers the cheapest solution for that, which comes in at $115. Also, there are a zillion different differential covers for the D44, some accept the high pinion, others don't. I chose to stay with a nodular iron design rather than aluminum. And although the Blue Torch Fabworks one tempted me, I wasn't going to pay the $115 for an un-finished cover. Solid Axle Technologies (I think that's the name) makes a good cover for $75, powdercoated. It has a higher fill hole to allow for more capacity. I didn't need a drain hole, when it comes time, I will just loosen the cover and drain it that way. Then all I have to do is get another gasket, which isn't a huge deal.

Most upgrade their master cylinder anyways. The front calipers are of higher fluid volume which makes the pedal travel longer. Have to do a longer sweep to activate the brakes. Makes people uncomfortable behind the wheel.

But, always a later option.

Yeah, I have heard the pedal travels a little more, but that it stops just fine. I will probably upgrade to the 300zx M/C if it is really bad. Although another gentleman I know that did the SAS upgraded it to a Ford M/C.

Can't wait til this thing is done

Hey, me too! LOL
