Hmmmm, Star Trek new hands down. I haven't seen any of the old Star Trek so I can't really comment on that, but I do like the original trilogy of Star Wars movies alot. The reboot of Star Wars will hopefully be epic in the hands of J.J. Abrams.

I just got back form watching the latest Star Trek. I had a hard time getting into the original series.

My brother was a die-hard Star Wars fan for awhile. We went so far as to meet half the major cast every year for the past few years. I do like the Star Trek movies better than Star Wars, however. Though, if you were to sum them up in two words: Lens Flare.

I've always been a Star Trek fan. Grew up watching the Original Series on VHS. Watched every episode of TNG at least 5 times. DS9 I had trouble watching later on, because I started working and I think UPN kept moving it. Voyager I watched for a while, but fell out after season 4 or 5. Never watched Enterprise first run. I've since caught up on every series on Netflix.

Star Wars is a nice ride as well, but they treat the world very different. Great story telling on Ep 4-6. Ep 1 I enjoyed as a 19 year old, but now I see the light. 2 was pretty 'meh', but 3 was a bit better. I too hope to see great things from Ep 7.

The really nice thing about Star Wars is you can invest about 12 hours and get the 'full' story, while Star Trek has about 28 YEARS of cannon to get through. Both have developed a bunch of side info, but the real cannon is 12 hrs vs 670 hrs.

I think the time dedication on three Star Trek TV series is what keeps me away. That's great there's that much material for fans, but it's too much for me to get into. I think a lot is available for free on hulu.com I could be wrong because I didn't add any to my playlist. Any recommendations on which series to start with? OG? NG? Generations?

TNG does a bunch of one-offs, but it does set up the shape and style of the 24th century Federation. Completely skip season 1. Season 2 is also pretty weak, but there are a few gems like the Sherlock Holmes episode, "Contagion", and we do get to meet the Borg for the first time. Do skip the last ep if season 2 - just flashbacks and every time I've seen it the sound is atrocious.

DS9 starts with one-offs, but moves into more of a serialized method around season 4. This series takes a darker tone than any other ST series.

Voyager has too many callbacks to TNG, and way too much Borg to really start with. seasons 1&2 have a persistent enemy, but the producers move away from that on season 3. Then the Borg become the background threat starting in season 4.

Enterprise is OK as long as you fully know what they were trying to do with it. It's set about 80 years after the discovery of warp drive. There is no Federation, and only a loose alliance with Vulcans. It's a good lead in to the Original movies.

I wouldn't bother too much with TOS unless you are looking for completeness.

Oh, and there was a cartoon TOS made too (I've only seen a few eps back in grade school)

I like each for different reasons, but Star Wars was more fun and entertaining. I mean come on, which is more fun to watch, a lightsaber fight, or some Starfleet officer hiding behind a rock, or a beam, or a hallway corner, firing a phaser at something else trying to hide.

But it's Stargate FTW though.

Star Wars all day. The original trilogy is just epic. Everyone says Jedi is weak, and it may be compared to Star Wars and Empire, but as compared to anything else its still awesome.

Episode 1 I liked as a 10 year old kid but its absolute garbage now. 2 isn't very good compared to the other films but is a decent film when compared to others. Episode 3 I think is very good.

Star Trek always bored me as a kid. And it may be because of the reasons Mac described, just too much history to jump into. Although I really liked the first JJ Abrams movie and hear good things about the new one (yet to see it).

I fully expect JJ to do great things with Star Wars too. As much as I love Lucas for creating Star Wars it was time to get some new blood behind the wheel.

I love the lens flare!

At some point, Abrams is going to make an hour and a half movie that is nothing but one giant lens flare.

Anyway. On to the matter at hand.

My wedding cake was R2D2. Not the silly grooms cake. The main wedding cake. Gee, I wonder which side of that line I stand on?

The original trilogy is 2.5 of my favorite movies. Jedi was a little off for me. Empire, the best hands down. I actually went out of my way to find the only released DVD trilogy that had the original cut of all three films. Yes the "remastered" stuff is on there two, but who wants to see a CG Jaba and Han get shot at first. No thank you.

Oh, and the decal on my truck over the hatch bump is the Jedi Knight symbol.

I just really like the Jedi mentality. Calm, rational, in control, and oh, btw, if you come at me you better not miss. Because I will end you. But I will never attack first. Always in defense.

I come from a family of Sci-Fi nerds. My parents are big Star Trek and Star Wars fans too. In fact, you could certainly classify my mother as a Trekkie.

All of that being said, I do thoroughly enjoy Star Trek as well. Mainly TNG. I like the mindset of the Federation. I like the model of the future that it puts forward. Money is not important, race is not important, everyone looks out for everyone else. The important things are knowledge and exploration.

It's an idealized future that I can easily get behind.

For those that haven't seen it, I highly recommend the Trek Nation documentary.

It's a real eye opener into what Star Trek is all about.

I do like the reboot of Star Trek. It's an interesting take one original. And I think it's well acted. Except for Chekov. I think the accent is a bit over the top.

/LENS FLARE!!!!

My preference would be start with TNG. TOS was a little slow at first and kind of hard to get into. Plus, the first half of season 2 is garbage. TNG will give you a good feel for the important parts and to me is much more entertaining. If you still can stand Star Trek at the end of 7 Seasons, I suggest the TNG movies after the TV show and then Voyager.

Jay, you're my hero. You nailed it.

Also:

Wow. That's pretty epic. Me like.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I'll have to find a new place for the Jedi emblem when I mount the Shrock. Because it will be completely obscured by the spare tire.

I'm going to be so disappointed when I get a rear bumper / tire carrier. Most of my fun stuff will be covered. However, Creepy has a wonderful fix for that already in the works ;)

I wanted to revive this thread for some food for thought:

AT-AT stands for "All-Terrain Armored Transport."

So...is an armored Xterra an AT-AT?

Well to stir the pot some too there is different variants of this line that the empire used. You have the AT- AT the AT-ST (scout transport) and the AT-TE (tatical enforcer) so the x could be any one of these depending on how it set up. I have mine as a AT-TX all terrain tatical Xterra.

Something just occurred to me. You can't be both an X-Wing and an AT-AT. Pick a side.
