Roof Lights...Do you REALLY use them?

They look nice but actually how many people use them on the trail? Unless you're first, they blind the driver in front of you. I've used mine 2 times and am really thinking about removing them. I have 2 on the bumper and can add 2 of the 4 if I really need the lighting.

Whatchathink?

On my Turk build I used them.. I liked them in the snow.. and at night o some of the back roads I travel.. But I was limited on where I could use them.. In town was a no no..
On my Stan build I have the 2 PIAA's on the bumper.. I use them a lot.. I hardly turn on my brights anymore because the PIAA's are so bright.. The roof light I have right now are not hooked up.. I have been working on a new basket and did not want to run the wires till Im happy with the basket design... But once that is done I will use them :)
The roof lights are nice for setting up a camp at night too :)

Over all I like them

I drive a lot of backroads and look forward to my B&M Lightbar when we finally get around to it.

I feel like my headlights are weak so I'll take all the visibility I can get.

I use mine rather often.. I travel backroads, and so it is nice to see what is 500 ft in front of you, or well what feels like 500 ft.. maybe more? I am not sure of my range.

I have 4 Hella 500's on my roof and plan to add more.

Granted I didn't consider those that actually drive on back roads often (city guy here). In Chicago (City proper) they require roof lights to be covered when not is use AND they can not be used within the city limits (even in snow) the Subs are a little easier.I guess I could leave 2 up there for potential snow reasons. So for me, It's bumper mounted in order to use them.

I figured you were in the city.. from the post..

Honestly the bumper lights are great too.. The higher the light the more reach they have.. but anything is better than nothing ;)

I'm in the city as well and have to have them covered around town, but then I just make excuses to use them when I'm not driving thru town :D

I've had mine on my hardbody roll bar for over 15 years now, and have yet to even hook them up, lol.

I'm going to put some on my X, and maybe I'll actually hook them up this time.

I have had to fix mine more than I got to actually use them, dam tight trails with trees. I took them off and with the bumper lights i dont miss them. I do have a set of 130w and a set of 55w on the bumper so it kind of offsets them a little.

While I can use the 55w on the road, the 130s will ruin anyones night vision in front of the truck.

I live in the city too and do not use mine that much at all but the reason I got them is:

It is not a real expensive mod, handy when you do need some extra light, kind of gives it that kool offroad look while creaping the mall parking lots.

I'm with you kyle, my back ups have saved my parents mailbox countless times. And living in the sticks of RI those driving lights make it far enough to catch the eyes of those pesky deer.

:lolz: OK OK OK... guess they are worth it to you X'ers that drive in the boonies on a regular basis. I'd use them too. So I suppose I'll leave 2 up there for the few times I venture off the beaten path. Besides, having 4 on the bumper I can get back at the ones with those blinding blue beams... Hit 'em with 4 130's. Or am I just being mean? :D

I use mine when I drive out on the country roads at night- which is often enough to have them. They come in real handy especially where I drive because of the amount of Deer running around like fools (I gotta be able to see them better to hit one and get a new front bumper ;) )

I have never been asked to cover my roof lights though anywhere near Chicago or in the city- odd.

Roof lights are great for backwoods w/o traffic except deer, etc. A higher light position gives better lighting with fewer shadows, etc. For ME though, overhead branches, etc, would rip them off, and, I do need to get into parking garages from time to time, etc.

I have to agree that they do or would come in handy in the woods that's for sure. I really wished I'd had them when I was in mammoth. Went on a hike in the late afternoon and it got dark a lot faster than I had anticipated and I had all my lights on back on that trail and was totally wishing for more. Especially cause I wasnt 100% familiar with the area.

Xoskel's LoPro Light bar keeps your lights out of the way from Garage Ceilings ;)

You must have a pretty face... I've left the covers off mine 2 times and both times I was told by CPD to cover them. They weren't even on!!! :shucks:

In my desire to have a clean waterproof way to clean up my light bar install, I wanted to ask if any of you has come across a quick disconnect, for when I want the light bar removed?
I just can't seem to find a clean plug/socket, that is worth a darn and does not leak!.
Any of you found a good one?

Wayne,
I can't remember where, here or CX but someone posted a pic of a quick disconnect setup they used. It allowed them to remove the whole setup.
Also, CX has a thread where the lightbar rolled down. I think it was able to be removed as well, but don't quote me on that part.

A 4 wire flat trailer connection works pretty well also. Just pack the connection with di-electric grease before you button everything up and you will have years of trouble free service out of it.

I got the guy that wired mine to use two 2 pole connectors, I don't know why I did not use one 4 pole but I do have 4 lights, I asked the Orielly's parts guy I normally deal with what he would recomend so that is why really.

VA law requires that any lights above the hood line be covered and unusable on ANY public road at ANY time. However, I'm still putting a set of 4 FF75's on my B&M Bar. Yes, they'll be covered 90% of the time...but It'll be worth it when I need them.

I would check a boating store. I think the majority of their wiring and plugs are water resistant or water proof.
Oh and here are my lights... :)

my stock roof lights....no, I really don't. but, it's because I don't like their beam. if they were a little more forward projecting and a little less area flood I'd be happier. The light actually backlashes in about half way up my dash, and does little to nothing for out infront that I don't already see because I have to turn my hi-beams on to use my roof lights. once I change the switch out for an always hot and find a better lamp to put up there, I'll use them much more often.
