Welcome in. The good news is there's quite a bit you can do to make your Xterra better for little or no money. If you plan to go off road, start by removing the rear sway bar if it hasn't been done already. Then there's the intake resonator delete that is super cheap. You'll also,find threads here on doing a body lift for under $100 if you're looking to add larger tires. There the PML (Poor Man's Lift) to raise your suspension which is also pretty cheap. Come to think of it, I'm starting to wonder why I never did either of those lift options. Anyway, take a look around. A lot of us have a build thread in our signature lines under each post.
