Arb locker install cost

So I was reminded arb only warranties their lockers when a certified shop installs them. Anyone know off hand what install cost is?

No clue on the install by a shop but you will need $70 ish worth of bearings, diff fluid, and an air source of course. I'm installing mine myself save the install money, doubt I'll have a problem with the install and if I have issues I'll pull it and repair it.

Edit to add: front or rear....I assumed rear?

Yeah I haven't decided whether to DIY the install or not...want to see how much to install and decide whether having the warranty is worth it. Probably run them off my Powertank

Front or rear?

Running mine off CO2 as well through the PT ARB manifold. Picked up a used second tank so I can use one for the locker(s) and the other for backup/tires/tools.

Good question. Orginally thought front first rear later, but now considering just knocking em both out at the same time

Heya NM. The ARB certified installer/warranty thing is an internet myth. I spoke with the tech manager at ARB USA and he said that there are no authorized installers, only authorized dealers. As a result, "the warranty is intact regardless of who installs it" I can forward you the entire email conversation if you want it. I also have two copies of the installation instructions and warranty info if you want a paper copy.

Also, 4 Wheel Drive Parts here in ABQ will install lockers for $450 per axle (quoted about a year ago). They will also swap diff gears for free while they are in there.

You know you want to do this your self... I'm sure that you and your local friend have what it takes to get it done. Let's have some beers after I get back next week and I can share the install info/tools that I've gathered...

Haha yeah, true. But they are having a 20% off install until July 7!
Hit me up when you get back

Its not to costly to do it yourself. The rear axle needs Toyota V6 bearings which fit the carrier the part number details are in the ARB manual. But, they were about $20-$30 a piece. Then of course the compressor. I'd recommend using the ARB line of compressors. ARB uses a strange british standard pipe thread which makes adaptor fittings hard to find. You need to either make or purchase a spanner tool to adjust the preload adjusters in the rear axle. The front axle didn't require additional parts. The locker kits are pretty complete. I did both axles myself. The rear axle being the easier one to do. As long as you take your time, follow instructions its really quite easy.

I would love a copy of that for reference.

The hardest thing for me was getting the right tap for the bulkhead fitting, the biggest thing to remember is that it is a 1/4 inch pipe tap. I compleetly agree with runnng the ARB compressor. They run specials from time to time when they throw in the compressor.

NM:

If you decide to go the adventurous route, I have the Rugged Rocks spanner tool if you want to use it for a while. Also, I got my Timken bearing set (the good stuff) from Rock Auto for about $30 for the pair. If you use one of their coupon codes, it will probably cover the shipping. I have the current code if you need it.

No problem. I think I sent the email from my work account and I'm out of town visiting family right now. It's a pain to remote into my work email but I'll give it a shot tonight. If it doesn't work, I may have to send it on when I get back to work on Monday.

I was quoted by a local shop $400 just to do the diff work. That was the cheapest. Closer to $700 to do everything. If I can find time, maybe I'll actually get it done. Having parts sitting on the shelf in the garage isn't helping get unstuck. heh.

For both, I'll do $450, but no gear change, just install the lockers. You'd have to run the air lines, but I'll test the lockers off the truck if there aren't any lines run at the time of install.

And I have plenty of bear poo. This was left in my driveway at the beginning of the week.

Rok, if I decide to go "the adventerous route" it might have to be in your garage...

NM

That will work; you and Terra are always welcome. I've been playing with pneumatic components (robotics hobby stuff) for several years and have a bunch of regulators, valves and fittings laying around. Maybe you can find something you can use.

We have bear poo too.

Well it looks like by the way prices where listed here that I was quoted quite high. My local shop said 1200 to regear the front and rear and put an arb in the front. I will do all the airlines and that aspect of it. He also said he will not warrenty the arb since they leak air after 8-12 months and He will have to go back in and replace seals. This leaking air is seriously making me reconsider installing this front locker. Sounds like the price to keep reentry the front diff will just add up to quickly.

Well so he will pull the front diff regear and re install the front diff? and then Pull the rear third regear and install 1200 is not bad considering if his labor rate is 100 dollars an hour thats only 12 hours. A little high yes but I would not bat an eye at a shop charging a grand. Again not that I would pay it but i can understand it.

Basicaly, the work is. Note for this price there is no warranty on the ARB Locker that he offers.

Re gear the rear diff,
Install locker and gears in M205 (not in the vehicle)
Install Diff into the vehicle.

Extra costs ($75/hr)
If diff does not directly bolt in. he says he gets told all the time they will and don't for other vehicles.
Installing half axles and such. I don't know if this is included in the pricing. (I can do this but they will frown appon it being done in there parking lot)
run air lines and compressor (if I have them do this)

Yeah. Any shop that's not willing to warranty his own work doesn't get my money.

For the record my install cost me $830. Including custom fabrication of a mount for the compressor and doing all of the air line and wiring work.

just to clarify. From my understanding its warrantying the arb/arb work. In another words if he had to go in there for the gear work then it would fall under his warranty but if it was locker work it would not. The reason i bring this up is due to this sounded really odd. Even after a bunch of research it seems like others have had the issue but by no means is it very common for how many arbs are out there. there is more of a issue with oil going up the air line and coming out of the switch solenoid. The guy I was talking to was talking about basically total failure of the unit where air blows by the piston and would be released by the diff vent line.

He's full of crap. A regear and ARB install has a lot of overlapping time. Backlash has to be completely reset for either operation. The only extra time necessary for an ARB vs another locker is the drilling of the hole, installation of the fitting and making sure the copper line is well away from the ring gear.

The regearing also has to set up the pinion depth and preload, but that has nothing to do with the ARB at all.

To state that he won't warranty the ARB is utter BS. Walk away. He doesn't want to do the work and his techs obviously don't know what they're doing if they're having to go back in and fix the leaks after that amount of time.

How many crappy looking Jeep Cherokees are sitting in his employee parking lot? How many of those are puking some sort of fluid, have bald tires or have lift blocks welded into place?

This guy is a joke and is trying to take your money. I'd be laughing and walking away while he was trying to explain his BS. Laughing really loud!!!

Why does re gearing cost so much? I can buy a M205 ship it over to California buy gears for it get it completely rebuilt and people around here want the same cost to install gears in the rear diff when I already own the diff? I wish I knew someone around here that knows how to do this and has a little more confidence then me. I'm sure I would be fine but I would like someone with a little more experience.

Are you talking about a diff already in the vehicle? Like body shops, they like as little work as possible. I had Scott at 4WP get me an estimate and last I checked, he preferred the axle (and/or diff) out if/when I delivered it. It just depends on how comfortable or busy they are. I shopped around and got several different estimates from reputable shops (however, 4WP was the only off road shop).

I called the 4wp in Houston and they quoted me 800+ I laughed and hung up. I heard Scott does not work at the 4wp in TN anymore. The reason they like it out of the vehicle is so they can rotate it and not have it on the lift to do all the work.

Have you contacted krawltex? I know of a place in Houston who does installs for 350 with the axle removed.

My 4wp is doing my 2gen for 300, and the guy comes highly recommended by some of the local folks, at first I was apprehensive about using 4words but after talking with some locals I trust he does good work
