Still thinking about installing a VHF/UHF radio for the truck. Also thinking where and how i want to install the antenna. Any opinions on these styles of antennas?

Rule of thumb.. ANTENNA MAKES THE RADIO..

That little stubby will be good short range Simplex and Local repeater. But your audio Quality will suck!.

Best bet install a Hood antenna, that you can fold down when not in use.. As with them Dam Drive through windows, having antenna whacking the roof of building gets frowned on!!.. Plus hard on Antenna.. ( I avoid drive through windows now ).

Nagoya NMO-72 19.25" Antenna NMO Mount Dual Band VHF, UHF (145/440Mhz) (Requires NMO Mount) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0744QPSG8/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_E4P2WXSYRZMC3X92X1TD?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

This is what I bought. Waaaaay better.
Bought many of those.. The spring coil, is nice for stripping leafs off branches.. Since, I was driving in Various Deep thick Logging Roads, and keeping Comms with Law Dispatch. End of trip, had nice Bush in side the Antenna spring. ;-} . BUT.. Had Them Fail, in the hot summer time. Melted the Hot glue the chinese kids used to seal it up.. I since, I upgraded to high Quality antenna for Long range Comm's.

THOSE are Great antenna for the price!!.. They will perform Really well, I had no issues reaching 60 miles out. Worthy for Antenna For use with Bofung radio's. Cost is good!!.

I guess the biggest thing is I should figure out where I want to install the antenna. Do I want to install it behind my A Pillar lights/ do I want to attach it to the top of my head ache rach/ or just try a magnet mount on the roof of the truck for a more temporary install. Need to really put some thought behind it. As well I should probably look into getting my ham license too while I am at it

Thats why I keep the shorty dome on there when I'm not wheeling. I wanted something that covered the ham and GMRS bands. This fit the bill and was cheap enough that it was the deal.

Antenna location, will have performance based on location.. With the Antenna RF energy going outwards, how it will reflect & achieve best range. Its a science by itself, so many ways.. BUT, We are not experts.. and thus, find the best location for your needs.
AKA have that simple antenna on a 24" Pizza pan.. works good, The RF energy will Reflect of pan. And compress the Antenna energy outwards. With out digging up my ham book with antenna Images on what the Wave does..

Anyplace that the antenna can have Free space for the energy to go outwards, will be good. If has something to Reflect, is bonus. Away from Electrical wires, that might create noise.. I always Like the High Ground!.

Only three things left on the trailer to do list.

Build 3 way Anderson plug for the trailer (got the truck side wiring done last night)

Move RTT from the X to the Trailer

Install weatherstripping for the doors.

All of which are happening today.

For what ever reason I can’t like this pic.

any ways. As seen in the pic that I’m attaching( see red dot that’s circled). This is where I am thinking of adding an antenna onto the headache rack. i just don’t want something too high that I will be hitting into everything

That or attach a small antenna on passenger side by the A pillar ( just like the CB Antenna in the second pic)

Those would work Perfect. Top would be more subject to impacts.
The Location on hood like your CB antenna.. would be best!. Less chancing of hitting things. Will perform Really well. I know folks that run that set up, with no issues.. Even with 50 Watts blasting into the cab.. They still alive.. and not cooked From The Rf energy ;-)

I had my cb antenna in the same spot on my Colorado.

I just use the stock Midland antenna that came with the mxt275 for the truck. For the X, I use an 18in Nagoya antenna sitting on a magnetic base. Both vehicles have them on the roof. Seems to work well enough (but I'm researching 3db antennas for better range in hilly terrain - but I don't know enough about how the dB affects range yet).
