I noticed that really GVWR of the 1st Gen is in the neighborhood of 5200lbs.... In stock form. What would be the minimum recommended capacity of a tow vehicle if I were to throw the X on a trailer, equipped with brakes of course. How much does a car trailer actually weigh in terms of towing capacity?

Dad's Titan pulled mine just fine (has factory tow package). Not sure what the specs are on it, but I can check next time I'm at their house.

Factory Titan towing capacity is 9500 from what I can find. So no surprises there. I'm wondering if I can get away with it down around 7000lb.

2 things to consider, trailer weight and tongue weight. I wouldn't recommend it because if the truck is 5200 plus probably ~1000 trailer. Too close for me to do it. 1000 is light for a car trailer too.

I towed one with a stock '97 F-150 on a 2200lb U-Haul, but suggest you use curb weight unless you plan to load down your truck too.

See that's the thing. GVWR includes passengers and cargo. So if it mostly empty, curb is closer to 4000. Even with a 2000lb trailer, that's only 6000lbs

I think you'd be ok as long as you don't have the X loaded down too much, the brakes will definitely help. Im assuming your asking this for the future v8 pathy?

Correct. I'm wondering if the v8 Pathy would be capable of towing the X if it had to go a few hundred miles.

Thanks for the advice Josh. If I ever did anything like that, trailer brakes would be a must & I'll be sure and make an advisement should this come to fruition. Heh.

Different X, different trailer, still did fine. Quite impressive actually since the Tundra has over 530K on it, all original.

Ask Gramps about towing with a V8 pathy, he has one and I THINK he's towed with it..... I think. :)

Cheers,
Josh

P.S. Sorry about the soap box trailer break thing. I've just seen too many people do it and BAD things happen. :(

With everything I noticed here it was the dog!! I want one.

I think you would be good with the pathy of you towed with a setup like caspers.... I have towed a lot with our v6 Model, and it actually tows better then a frontier... I have done 5000lbs but even at that weight you really didn't know anything was back there... I also have airbags in the rear coils

For reference, with a full tank of gas, me in the drivers seat, and a whole bunch of tools and whatnot in the back, my truck weighs 5650.

semi-related towing question, since Josh brought it up...I have a small utility trailer I use to tow either an ATV (with another one in the bed of the truck) or miscellaneous light-ish loads. Tow vehicle is Ram 1500. I have tow brakes, but don't have the control unit attached at the moment. Am I incorrect in thinking it's unnecessary for such a small trailer/light load? i can hook the unit back up pretty easily, just haven't because i didn't think it was necessary. Soapbox away, folks, I really don't know the tow game very well....
P.S. - I've also towed that trailer with the Chef, no problems...

P.P.S. - (Edit) - I am realizing as I look into this, the brake control unit on my truck I imagine would have linked to a larger trailer with brakes on it, and is useless with my utility trailer?
