odd clunk in body lift.

I wasn't sure where to post this question so feel free to move it to the correct location..

My question is... I've noticed a clunk on the underside of my truck. It happens every so often when turning, mostly to the right. It feels like someone is hitting under the truck with a sledge hammer, you can totally feel it in your seat. I have gotten under and tried to shake everything i could get my hands on. Nothing.. I mean NOTHING is loose. Is it possible that perhaps a body lift bolt could be loose? I'm going to check the torque on them. But it almost sounds as if the belly of the truck is clunking... kind of like if you take a baking sheet and give it a twist and it pops. If that makes any sense! lol.

Anyone ever come across anything like this?

My 2004 done the same exact thing when I had the body lift done mine. Crawled underneath tightened all the lift pucks down and that was problem solved. The rear 2 were loose on mine and when it made that pop it like echoed through through the whole truck.

Yup, bolts needs tightening....that happened to mine too....you're supposed to retorque the bolts every 100 miles for about 300 miles and it should be good afterwards.

Doesn't hurt to use red loctite either....only a weld can break that loctite if its red.

This may sound odd but I was having the same issue the sound was coming from the same area, but my pucks are all torqued correctly... what it ended up being is bad bushings in my idler arm

I checked my idler arm. It's safe and sound. So it has to be the pucks. I never knew about the tightening every so many 100 miles. I did the BL in... umm June.. just before NXM... I guess that means I should have been stopping during the trip from NJ to TN to tighten lol. Oops!

It doesn't have to be every 100 miles even though it is recommended but after a long distance trip right after the BL was done, it should be retorqued just to be safe and peace of mind, and loctite works wonders too. I'd try to retorque them and see what happens but Im pretty sure it will fix that issue.

Will do sir! I'm meeting up with XterraMike and Tim B from Brooklyn over in Philly on Saturday for a mod day. I'll be sure I do it then... I don't have a torque wrench :-(

My rear body bolts came loose about 2 weeks after the install, I did not have such an odd clunk sound as you described but it was more of a heavy duty plastic puck popping type noise and I also could tell it was the right rear doing it. You may also want to check the drive shaft safety loop too, I was getting some squeaking noise there due to the loop touching the metal bracket it goes through, had to split some water hose to make a bushing between the two and tie wrapped each end so it would not move.

That is good, did you see which ones were loose causing the noise? Did you check the safety loop to see if it was touching and making other noises too?

Safety loop was a-okay! I really just went around and tightened them all. Some were already tight enough. I was more the back end bolts that needed tightening.

Ok so.. this noise is still happening. Every right and left turn, also now if i take a curve type turn. My boyfriend and i have been under the truck and checked everything. NOTHING is loose. I stood on a tire and held he roof rails and shook the crap outta the truck to get it to make the sound and had no luck. :shucks:

It feels like it's under the front seats, and over the weekend a back seat passenger says they feel it in their feet. I am going BONKERS over this. I have discussed the noise with XterraMike and he was baffled as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :luv:

If it stopped from tightening the bolts the first time it might be loose again, I would recheck them and if it is them loose again they may need loctite...they do recommend using it on the install but it might be kind of tricky doing it now.

Keep us posted.

I pull up behind or next to a Prius or a smart car and i usually get a head shake of disapproval. I return with a "little rascals" type of wave... gets them to smile every time.

safety loop removal is easy - just crawl under the truck, between the wheels but closer to the back, look up and see where the u-shaped piece of metal loops under the drive shaft, inside a bracket on the frame cross-member, and up to the body where it is secured with a pair of bolts screwed up into body-mounted nuts. Hit em with PB blaster first to be sure. Then Loosen and remove bolts. Loop can be turned and slid straight out of the bracket. Check out Soccerbrace's DIY over on the other site for a closeup of the loop and bolt...

Have you checked your seats bolts? I know the washers can crack and break.. But you would feel the seat shifting

I've had that issue on my driver's seat forever. I probably ought to address it one of these days...the "clunk" doodle is talking about is unmistakeable. I will be surprised if it isn't the safety loop. Pretty sure it happens when the body reacts to tension on the loop caused by not enough accomodation from the BL

I know me too! However in the HOW TO i am getting torn a new one for removing the safety loop. I failed to mention that until I get the time and money to run out and get the proper spacers for it the loop will stay off. lol
