Hey Yall,

Nice to meet you, First Post.

I just left the dealership.

I had gone quite a distane to pik up a 2012 xterra po-4x that was originally titled in early 2013. It was a CPO wih 5k miles. I was going to pay 28k out the door.

It had cloth Seats, Nevada Tow package.

When I got there I found a pretty weird paint problem inside of the door, I didn't particularly want to deal with it.

The dealer offered to fix it and I was making a decision a to walk, or come back in a few days and pick it up.

Then a brand new Lava Red 2014 caught my eye. It had 760 miles, at the dealer.

It was a Pro-4x, with Leather. Heated Seats, Sat NAV, but no tow kit. I talked them down to 31750 out the door.

Was this a good deal? I hadn't intended to buy a new one, so I didn't shop around for those.

Also, I absolutely have to have a tow kit. What do y'all recommend? It looks like a simple bolt on, with a jumper wiring harness. I think it should be pretty easy. What do you think?

Welcome to the Nation from Colorado!!!
As for the hitch, I'm sure that I've got at least 1 in the NORAC bone yard (side of my house)

Me personally.. I would buy a aftermarket bumper... It will cost you a little more but the extra protection is worth it in my eyes..
Check out hardcore offroad.. They make a affordable rear bumper..

The harness can be picked up at your dealer.. Plug and play

I second this. Maxterra is also a good choice and gives a few more options ( tire carrier, reverse lights, jerry can holder) I'm very pleased with mine.

Welcome to the Nation!

And thirding what DRB stated. In the long run, you are going to end up wanting to upgrade that bumper. If you go after market and ditch that flimsy stock one you are better off.
HC has them for what, $350?

If you decide to go with a stock hitch, there might be someone in your area with used one sitting around. If you ever plan on going off road. Just get a aftermarket bumper. You will not have that hitch hanging down then. There are a bunch of great options out there. Check out the following.

Bucksnort (sold at xterraperformance.com) or contact him through the forums
Maxterra you can contact him through the forums
Hardcore offroad - newer brand to xterra's but looking very promising
boulder ironworks - newer brand but trusted by one of the top Nissan dealers.
Hefty - been around a while, have not heard any complaints about there rear bumper
Shrockwork - been around, enjoy a long wait after you order

I know there are a few others out there that I might of missed. But in the end all of them are basically the same. If you get a tire carrier then that is where you will start noticing more a differences.

For the wiring harness just buy the OEM one from the dealer. Plug and play. Two parts, one by the reciever and other by the passenger seat. There is a write up about this too.

The hardest thing about changing the rear bumper are the bolts. A lot of people struggle with getting them loose. I swear nissan torques those things to at least 180ft/lbs

Welcome to the Nation from Moose Jaw Saskatchewan Canada. sounds like you got a steal of a deal. as everybody els has mentioned if you plan on wheeling save yourself a step and go right for an aftermarket bumper for a couple extra bucks. if you plan on towing alot with your x, there are a few places that you can install your brake controler and there is a link to a website that sells extendable towing mirrors ( if you want to see what I mean look in my build thread, last couple pics)

Thanks for all of the advice. I think for now I am going to just put a regular hitch. I do like the idea of the upgraded bumpers. However, the lady shot that idea down. I will have to wait until the truck is not quite so bright shiny and new. Haha. Then She will let me have at it. She did give me the go ahead for some rock rails and a brush guard. I think this will be fun! I have never had, nor participated in any offroading. However, I do like all of the outdoorsy stuff, life fly fishing, hunting etc. Its about time I got a truck.

Welcome to the Nation!! I also have a Pro-4X, and it is hands down the best vehicle I've ever owned. You're gonna love it!

Spend the money you were gonna waste on the brush guard and receiver hitch and just get a Maxterra rear bumper. I did on this Xterra, but not on my first one, and it was the one regret I had besides not getting a 4WD. It's a great, solid bumper with the receiver hitch integrated at bumper level, instead of hanging several inches below. I nearly tore mine off on my first Xterra, and I was only cutting through a median on the highway because the police had us counter-flowing around a burning truck. The brush guards (which have earned the nickname "damage multipliers") are mounted in such a way that the force a smallish impact that would ordinarily only scratch the plastic of the front bumper get leveraged and multiplied, pushing the top of the brush guard into the hood, grill, fenders, and headlights, thus turning a possible zero dollar bump into a couple thousands of dollars of damage. There are many photos on this forum and others documenting this. Brush guard are just what they say they are: they guard against brush.

You can see the Maxterra bumper in my build thread, clickable in my signature. I have the basic bumper with no tire carrier. It has been and will continue to be the best money I've spent on this vehicle since I bought it. And to be honest, it was not that much more than the Nissan Receiver hitch.

Yes j Everett is absolutely spot on here, I started very similar to what you were thinking I even bought the damn hitch. Then after the head ache I faced with it I kick my self for just not going right to the bumper. Same with the brush guard I wanted one until I saw the wreck photos from all the forums involving a brush guard. I ended up going full bumper eventually.

Also check out some the accident photos from those that have been rear ended with after market bumpers, I've seen them it's always surprising to see how little damage occurs to the xterras vs the hitters

Welcome to the nation! Check out courtesy nissan's parts website for the wiring harness. I received mine the day after I ordered it and didn't pay for special shipping.

===> Welcome, from MA! Sounds like me! I just got a 2014 Pro-4X, and for the same reasons! Fly Fishing Instructor, Hammock Camping, hunting, wilderness exploring, Skydiving.....

So far I have added a Raingler Roof Net, 4 Raingler Premium Handholds, an internal roof net (GREAT for sliding a bunch of set-up rods into!), an internal floor cargo net, a portable cooler/food heater, side step rails (may go to rock sliders), Molle/Pals seatback covers, and still going!

This is a PERFECT truck for getting out into the Piney Woods!

LOL WOW that's absolutely horrible that it happened but kind of funny how they provide almost 0 protection lol Other than looks, it's almost useless XD

If you average the before looks with the after looks, it doesn't actually add looks either.

:D

Brush Guards are simply a good way to spot Newbs, as they loudly proclaim: "I DIDN'T KNOW!" as the Newb drives by.
