Make me want a 2nd gen Xterra. Have you owned both gen 1 and 2?

I've been considering upgrading to a more modern vehicle lately. My gen 1 has a few faults that can't be fixed. Not enough power, fragile dated steering suspension and well I'm starting to need more interior room, towing capacity, and creature comfort. I'm getting tired of repairing it all summer only to always have it half ass and fail anyways. Thinking a quiet ride in a more refined vehicle that gets better mpg's and has more power and reliability would be the better option.

But, I'm curious is the 2nd gen Xterra really that big of a upgrade? I know the wrong question to ask. Don't want this thread to turn hate on gen 1 owners. Those that have bad things to say about the xterra can send me a pm if you don't want to great drama here. I'm really looking for the people that have owned both or still own both. With accurate honesty not just word of mouth or I love my Xterra because i own it

The improvements over the gen 1 seem obvious.
*more hp and torque
*no timing belt
*no torsion bars
*rear locker option
*comes with big tires and can fit huge ones.
*more refined
*much more aftermarket and fan base.
*interior is bigger and the seats fold down.
*truck is bigger 2" in every direction.
*rack and pinion steering
*no locking hubs

Is it any more reliable then a gen 1? I've had so many problems with my gen 1 and hardbody pickup that I'm honestly worried to buy another Nissan. I see several gen 2 issues pop up on here time to time. timing chain adjuster failing, fuel sending unit failing, abs sensors failing, the pink milkshake, the rear leaf springs not being stiff enough. But, are they repeat issues during ownership? Or once you fix the issue it stays fixed. What might be issues that cannot be fixed. For example with a gen 1 the front ifs was poorly engineered and nothing can fix that.

But, when you put a 2006 4runner into the mix the 4runner has the majority of the above plus.
*HID headlights
*power sunroof
*power rear glass
*4 link smooth riding rear suspension
*multi mode transfer case
*Toyota reliability quality and resale value

Yet they have problems as well. V6 head gaskets, seized brake calipers. and cracking dashes.

My dad owns a 4runner I've driven it on vacation as its tons more reliable and smoother running then my gen 1 and gets better mpg. But, it has no personality or character. Though i guess most stock vehicles don't. Though I find myself leaning to the Toyota do to what I listed above.

Just trying to prevent myself from upgrading to the same truck. Only to be stuck with a similar problems set. Its not that I hate my gen 1 its still my favorite vehicle. I may even just keep it to wheel with as its really capable. I just want to travel a bunch this year and my older vehicle isn't seeming like it is up to the task as I already have a large list of issues and things to fix.

I went from an 04 to a 2011 Pro-4x and its like night and day. I like Nissan. Great vehicles for the price in my opinion. Lacks navi and some minor options for me but that's what mods are for. Or buy brand new. If you can afford it. I'd go for it.

If you can afford a 2010+ xterra a lot of the issues you stated are fixed, I just picked up a 2011 pathfinder for my wife and was sorta in the same boat, wanted more space power realiabilty then the gen one, test drive Tons of other vehicles and the pathfinder fit, and honestly it wasn't even on our list to start

agreed, most of the issues in the 2nd gen are cleared in 09+, I've got a '10 and I just intentionally reversed the radiator bypass mod, because, well, it's pretty friggin pointless to take away part of the factory cooling if nissan has already addressed the SMOD issue...

I only have one *major* gripe about the 09+, and that's the fact that the factory ECU will de-tune to maintain "factory performance levels" if you start modding under the hood...I have a friend/customer that found it out the hard way, he'd done a CAI, throttle body spacer, custom high flow exhaust, dumped the rear cats completely and replaced the front ones with high flow ones, and still, the rig ran exactly the same as stock...bought a bullydog tuner, tuned it to the "regular" tune for optimizing for regular gas, and then disabled the WOT restriction, and then about 3 days into driving it around, the engine woke up, realized it could make a LOT more power, and then there was a huge performance difference, and he's still getting as good, if not better fuel economy than factory, with a very noticeable performance increase... (it's just a shame he's got a 2WD and is afraid to get it dirty)

I had a 2000, then a 2002 and now I have a 2007. It was a good move as wifh my 1st gen I always wanted additional power. You will not regret the move.

I have owned a few ;)

3.3 is just underpowered.. No way around that issue but it does make great torque..
Towing... Both are rated about the same... but the 4.0 is much nicer for it..
SMOD.. This is a real issue.. 2005-2009 Right about the 100k range.. The by pass will fix this issue..
Timing chain.. Yeah its a pain.. but Im pretty sure the guy that tore down a tranny could fix this simple issue.
The Gen 2 does ride better vs the Gen 1 but put lets not forget.. This is based on a truck..
MPG's Depending on what your plans are its not too bad on fuel stock.. 16 in town-- 18 to 19 on the HWY.. Till you start the mod bug...

I do like my Gen 2 more than my Gen 1... but isnt that what your supposed to do?

Now I will say this... Look at the Toyota Sequoia The 2003 we had for a short time was very plush. I had a manual TC and a Toyota locker of sorts..
Rust is a issue on the Gen 1 Sequoias.. So I would stick to a 2005 more HPs too... I avg 18 to 19 on a trip to Ohio... and that was loaded down with 6 people in it.
Its a V8..and it will get up and go.. Coils all the way around.. So the ride was AWESOME! This would make for a great MOAB style rig.. you could sleep in it with room to spare.

Out of all the Nissans I have owned I would buy a Frontier again in a heart beat.. The crew cab I had was the best of both worlds.. I could tow, camp, and do about everything I wanted with it.
I avg 22 to 24 on a trip to Ohio.. and it rode better than the Xterra. Now it was a LE so it was loaded.. Sun roof and nice radio and all.. If a Tornado wouldnt have killed it.. It would still be in my drive right now.

Think about this... Why do we all love the Xterra? Its different... It has its own unique look...

hm....I was wondering what it was, cause, if mine had it, I'd start budgeting toward fixing it cause I do have a slight whine from under the hood.

If you still have warranty, I'd get that looked at.

Sent from Avalanche Tactical Response Command.

I presume it's normal, it's the same whine it's had since day one...

(I'd have to spend $20 at the spray it yourself car wash to spray all of the mud and crap out before letting the stealership look at anything mechanical again...)

My 2002 just died a couple weeks ago and now I've picked up a '12 pro4x.

Like everyone's said, night and day. I feel I can stretch out, and with the new seats my ass won't fall asleep on the 5hour drives to upstate NY one a year for B2SR.

I haven't started the mod bug yet (she's too new) but gimme a month and I'll prob jump right into it.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I bet that my 1st Gen, when it finally dies, will probably just stay in my garage for sentimental purposes.

And then I'll pick up a 2nd Gen (or even the 3rd Gen by then...) and start the modding process all over again :hihi:

SD...I'm glad you posted this thread. I've been asking this same question myself. I L O V E my Gen1 and always will, but I've noticed it's slowly turning into my w/e toy/project. Something to clear my mind and excape from the world while I fix and refix "stuff". I know I'll never get ride of it but the idea of getting a Gen2/Gen3 has been a growing strong idea.

Thanks all who weighed in. I've got maybe 15,000 to spend so I'd likely be after a older 2005-2007 with low miles. Probably would wait for a off road model as locker seems worth the effort and coin. It seems bright. I'm almost thinking I may just make myself set aside cash this year in a "fake car payment account" so next spring I can pay cash for the upgrade and avoid interest. Love my current rig so I'm not in any real rush. Just hit a wall with the upgrades and been considering upgrading the vehicle entirely lol. I really need to test drive one to see how the glove fits. Though in a way the thought of a testdrive scares me as I might love it and never look back. I see them around town everywhere just teasing me. There is a black one at a lot with 80,000miles for just a fuzz over 9k. Super tempting. but man a silver offroad would hit the spot. Admittedly I wouldn't feel as bad swapping a xterra for xterra would be like I never sold her in a way. Sedimental is right though many memories life gains and strives as a result of my ownership.

I would love to upgrade to a newer X one day. I drove Noxious' and it was a blast. It really is like night and day as far as comfort and power are concerned.

For now I will be patient; I want to see what Gen3 brings to the X lineage.

Well i can weigh in on this...i am the original owner of a 2000. I have modded the crap out of it and love it. A while ago i bought a 2012 pro4x because it was a deal. But i decided i was too attached to terra and sold the new one. Recently bought another gen2, a 2007 offroad with some mods. Great rig but still cant get rid of terra...
