I've been considering upgrading to a more modern vehicle lately. My gen 1 has a few faults that can't be fixed. Not enough power, fragile dated steering suspension and well I'm starting to need more interior room, towing capacity, and creature comfort. I'm getting tired of repairing it all summer only to always have it half ass and fail anyways. Thinking a quiet ride in a more refined vehicle that gets better mpg's and has more power and reliability would be the better option.
But, I'm curious is the 2nd gen Xterra really that big of a upgrade? I know the wrong question to ask. Don't want this thread to turn hate on gen 1 owners. Those that have bad things to say about the xterra can send me a pm if you don't want to great drama here. I'm really looking for the people that have owned both or still own both. With accurate honesty not just word of mouth or I love my Xterra because i own it
The improvements over the gen 1 seem obvious.
*more hp and torque
*no timing belt
*no torsion bars
*rear locker option
*comes with big tires and can fit huge ones.
*more refined
*much more aftermarket and fan base.
*interior is bigger and the seats fold down.
*truck is bigger 2" in every direction.
*rack and pinion steering
*no locking hubs
Is it any more reliable then a gen 1? I've had so many problems with my gen 1 and hardbody pickup that I'm honestly worried to buy another Nissan. I see several gen 2 issues pop up on here time to time. timing chain adjuster failing, fuel sending unit failing, abs sensors failing, the pink milkshake, the rear leaf springs not being stiff enough. But, are they repeat issues during ownership? Or once you fix the issue it stays fixed. What might be issues that cannot be fixed. For example with a gen 1 the front ifs was poorly engineered and nothing can fix that.
But, when you put a 2006 4runner into the mix the 4runner has the majority of the above plus.
*HID headlights
*power sunroof
*power rear glass
*4 link smooth riding rear suspension
*multi mode transfer case
*Toyota reliability quality and resale value
Yet they have problems as well. V6 head gaskets, seized brake calipers. and cracking dashes.
My dad owns a 4runner I've driven it on vacation as its tons more reliable and smoother running then my gen 1 and gets better mpg. But, it has no personality or character. Though i guess most stock vehicles don't. Though I find myself leaning to the Toyota do to what I listed above.
Just trying to prevent myself from upgrading to the same truck. Only to be stuck with a similar problems set. Its not that I hate my gen 1 its still my favorite vehicle. I may even just keep it to wheel with as its really capable. I just want to travel a bunch this year and my older vehicle isn't seeming like it is up to the task as I already have a large list of issues and things to fix.
