AT&T Throttling-Off Topic :)

So I know this is going around, about AT&T supposedly limiting your data speed when you use a lot of data. I use my phone quiet a bit but not as much during school so thats 6-7 hours a day my phones data is just limited to text messages. Sprint has the new commercial out about not slowing your data speed down no matter how much data you use.
This video will explain it better if you're still scratching your head.

So I got the app from the video "speediest.net" from the app store.
Here are my results. I ran all the test from 3G NOT wifi. Seems a bit staggered, I'm interested to see if anyone is being "throttled" so grab the app run the test (only takes 10 seconds or so) and then upload a pic or something!

Some of that could be based on others near you using the network..

The mixed results are normal as well as the high pings, I get the about the same with C Spire. Just the nature of the beast when it comes to 3G.

Yes, but with AT&T, you can surf and talk at the same time, what else do you need?, lol. That's the whole reason I have AT&T. With everyone else, you can only do one or the other, but not both at the same time. I'd rather be throttled back a little, than not have the option at all, lol.

That's the only way I get through my weekly confrence call. I shout a little cheer when our LA engineer is not on.

Yeah, my internet has not been working for over a week on my iphone. It is SO slow. I called multiple times and complained. The only thing they tell me is there is a lot of congestion on the network in my area. So I go on to explain to them that I understand that but this is a HSPA+ network (faster than 3G) and this should not occur EVER. This is a small town, not New York. So, i think they need to either add a new tower or beef up the one they have here because it is not good. When I go to Chicago, I easily hit 6megs. BG, maybe 1MBPS.

Yup, and you go to frankin and hit dead spots, well there are huge dead spots all over town. If bluegrass wireless would allow Verizon to use there towers I can bet Verizon would be a lot better and faster. If it ever happens my family has already said we'll make the switch...and AT&T has the batman building in nashville so I would think they could show us some love!

I agree, they should. And you can totally switch to verizon. It will work fine here, no problem. I use to be a manager for Verizon wireless and some of my family in Chicago who travels here a lot has verizon, works great.

ok, to clarify, the way they're doing the throttling is if you're in the top X percentage of data users nationwide, or at least that's how they explain it in their legalese. Verizon and T-Mo do it too, but, the way VZ does it is a little more acceptable. VZ's method is only if you have an old unlimited plan, and ONLY if you have a 3G phone (i.e. blackberry or iphone, or old android phone) and then it's if you're in the top 2% of the users on the tower you're on, you're throttled on that tower, once you move to a different tower you're un-throttled (or so they tell us), and it's not an automatic thing, it only occurs when a network tech flags you, AND only if your tower typically runs near full capacity.

As far as the "no one else lets you surf and talk at the same time" that's total crap, any carriers phone will surf on wifi and talk simultaneously, any LTE phone (on att or verizon) can do it, and any GSM phone (on absolutely ANY carrier that supports GSM) can do it all the time, however, remember one thing, your surf capabilities are reduced to a little better than dialup when you're on a GSM phone surfing while talking.

If you're so addicted to surfing and talking at the same time, enjoy ATT and their network that gets the absolute worst reviews of any carrier, or switch to t-mobile, theirs is little better, but, at least they don't have as many customers so you don't have to fight with their overcrowding. If you have a wifi connection at home and at work, then by all means, look elsewhere, as most every smartphone has wifi by now, and they can all surf and talk while connected to wifi. Oh yeah, as far as talking and playing games, that's cake, you only need an internet connection when you're trying to play "freemium" games on iOS (free with mandatory ads) or when trying to play online.

oh yeah, the side explanation: the source of my understanding of how the various carriers work is that I work for one of them ;)

Ha, dream on. In Smyrna, despite their "coverage map", I get horrible signal, not to mention when I lived one exit further north in La Vergne, I got similar service.
