You can never say "If cost were no object", because it takes away all limits. If there were no limits on the build, what could you do? ANYTHING. It could have deployable hot air balloons to pick it up over obstacles, 100" tires made of titanium weaves, and so on....its meaningless.
We ALL have budgets...of SOME TYPE. Its actually MORE interesting to see what everyone does WITH that budget.
There's also practical considerations...For me, unless I just had a beater to play with, etc, it makes no sense to put more into a rig than its book value...if you wreck it, you're effed.
If I wanted a solid axle in front, I'd buy a rig with a solid axle in front, etc, rather than do surgery on the IFS...it makes no sense financially, for ME. If mine WASN'T a DD, and it WAS a trail toy, sure, I might accumulate parts until I had what I needed, and THEN do it. I ENJOY that sort of thing.
My X evolved because the Wrangler was too small...and I needed the X to be able to do what the Wrangler used to do for me, which was get me and my equipment into the boonies to set up monitoring stations, etc. Its a work truck.
That meant compromises. I was heavily loaded down, and while I wanted articulation, flexy springs with no "Road Grader/Load Leaf" could not come close to supporting that weight....and ONE set of AAL wasn't enough either, so I had to make a custom pack out of the OEM leaves and TWO sets of AAL...
Which was too stiff, and a bit tall in back...so I removed the Calmini shackles, and installed Revolver Shackles. These added back the flex, in spades, and, soften the ride out nicely (Hence why Goodyear called them "Velvet Ride Shackles" back when they invented them).
I needed to run some air tools and to at least be able to air back up after being off road, so the OBA was a natural addition when a jeep based group buy scored the Maxaire for ~ $100.
The wife was tired of me whacking deer and so forth on the backwoods that I have to drive, so I got the Shrock stuff and winch for birthday/x-mas...(I told Jim to tell her it came with the sliders and winch...)
And so forth...I would see what I needed the X to do that it couldn't do now, and plan the changes to make it able to.
Rinse/repeat.
