I was ranting about financials and responsibilities with other x'ers on here on why my x isn't as cool as everyone else's, I have found everyone struggles with it now and again...so I'm proposing I money wasn't an issue what would you do to your x's next! All I want is for it to be lifted! The other people were comforting me about why my x isn't as awesome and I came to realize, at least it's an xterra right!?!tips greatly appreciated on how you prioritize your x mods!?

I bought my bumper first thing and claimed it was all because I wanted protection from deer, which is partially true. I really was just drooling over it for quite a while before I got my X so it was definitely at the top of my list. If I had it all to do over again I would have probably gone lift and tires first.

If money was no issue I'd have a NissTec lift, 33 GY Wrangler Duratracs, my Hefty, RockyMountainX sliders w/step, Gobi full replacement rack w/ladder, a full set of ARB aluminum skids, a full set of Raingler nets, a hatch tent, a Hefty Rear bumper w/tire carrier & can carriers, and lots of little things. But since money is an issue I will slowly get maybe half of this and the rest will remain a lottery dream.

Hearing that post makes me feel alot more comfortable!! And it sounds like you have an awesome build in mind! Well i hope to win the lottery because I would like to see that build!!

So you're saying if you win the lottery you'll hook me up!?

Yeah, likely I'll end up having a DepHep rack, NissTec lift, RockyMountainX sliders/w step, and a Raingler net within a year or so. And the rear bumper will be one of those down the road things. The tires will come when the ones I have wear out.

If I had it to do all over...(humm, that reminds me of a song) anyways, and money was no issue. I would do a solid axle swap without thinking about it. If money wasn't an issue then we don't need to prioritize anything, just do it.

If I wasn't going to SAS it then I would buy a set of tires and wheels that I wanted, then get a suspension lift and because it is an Xterra a body lift installed and put the wheels and tires on after that, then I would do the steering upgrade. Next I would then start adding the front and rear bumpers and then sliders and skids.
Then after that just whatever other extra goodies I would like to accessorize it out.

Well i hate to chime in on this, but i understand where youre coming from man, never throught my rig would be where it is today.
the first thing i did was drop my dvd/nav in and that was cause it was an amazing deal. waited a bit then, got in on a gobi ladder group buy so thats how i got that, then i found an awesome deal on some off road 6 spoke rims thanks to one of the guys over tnx, so i jumped on those, and managed to sell my 5 spoke S rims, basically broke even. Then I managed to find a guy who needed step rails asap for his pregnant wife, so i sold them to him, Then sold my cross bars. So with these now sold I payed for my dephep. In terms of my lift well thats was money out of pocket. as were my tires. I sold my old tires and yes shipped them, that payed for my sliders, but had to have them installed since i was on the road with 2 girls who were basically in a hurry to get it done and explore colorado, so that was money out of pocket. Well thats almost up to date, and I figured thats where id be fore a while, well i thought wrong, managed a sweet deal on a used arb that i'll get here in may or sooner, thanks to the seller being really really really awesome! Somewhere in there i got my rad skid used off another member. I guess the lights were out of pocket too. I won a drawing for a raingler net on tnx so that how i got mine. So I think that brings us up to date. So i dont know if it was just a matter of right timing, that i was able to sell and buy new stuff for my rig or what but i dont think ive done too bad I know my wife is kinda like what are you doing, but yeah. so far my favorite thing is my tires and lift, my old tires were garbage off road, especially in the soft dirt we have here "they"(the locals) call bug dust.

Now money no object, Id probably be right there with mac on the rear bumper, arb skids, raingler nets(still need to pick up another one), id rock radflos and alcans(these maybe a reality we'll see), a locker maybe a Titan swap IDK mainly cause i think i could do that on my own ( dont think i could SAS by my self), but if money is no issue then maybe a SAS...
the x would be my weekend toy and my daily driver would be an STI rally car and i would have immunity to drive however i wanted on the streets, it would probably the same color as the X.

Haha, if money was no issue to buy a new rig or have a dd rig then things would get a little crazy here. I have already spent WAY more money on my X than I did on my mustang. It's all because of having a regular job working 40 hours a week. I liked college but it seemed like I was dirt poor the whole dang time.

glad to see you started the tread Dustin!

is swap mine out for a 5 spd.
SAS, heftyfab front and rear with tire carrier, Gobi, have Dave make me a sweet custom roof rack, redo my interior, throw in a system, monstaline my entire truck black with a pink hood (insert giggle here), finish of my shrock skids, throw on some sliders, upgrade my steering, snorkel....

man this list is never ending lol

SL and a PML? You do realize a PML is half of an SL, right? Looks like I almost own your dream X lol

I think as you shop around and save for what you really want eventually you are going to find great deals. My Calmini steering($275), AC 3" SL($650), Volant CAI($100), Shrock front($350) were all second hand. I saved about $1700 with these deals. I bought a few pairs of used BFGs off CL and turned around and sold them for more than I paid and made some cash off of those. In addition to that, I sold my SC rims and tires for $450, which went towards my tires and rims. I picked up my Duratracs when they were on sale and during tax return time, so I got a great deal. I have always been extremely responsible with money so I paid off my X 3 years early and saved for the things I wanted.

Of course if money were not an issue, I would have SASed with 37s, added lockers, sliders, headers, exhaust, lights etc. But for now I am pretty happy with my X and the progress I have made.

I built my dream X.

Then I sold it. Now I wanna do it again, but keep the windows. I like windows.

And I had about $10k into it, all of it, including buying the truck (as an insurance total).

Y'all will get there. It doesn't happen overnight. If it did, it wouldn't be worth much in the end. If it takes longer to build, more sweat, more busted knuckles and hard work, you'll appreciate it so much it isn't even funny. Trust me.

If I didn't need the money to go back to school, the PhoeniX would still be in my driveway, with only a couple of minor changes to her. She was the culmination of a long time of dreams and wants.

Just do it when you can.

Don't worry Joe, we have 2 others. Her 2011 Pro4 X and my other 2002 unit. I just need to work on it. If I sell my '66 Beetle tomorrow, the '02 will be back on the road handling shuttle duties.

You can never say "If cost were no object", because it takes away all limits. If there were no limits on the build, what could you do? ANYTHING. It could have deployable hot air balloons to pick it up over obstacles, 100" tires made of titanium weaves, and so on....its meaningless.

:D

We ALL have budgets...of SOME TYPE. Its actually MORE interesting to see what everyone does WITH that budget.

There's also practical considerations...For me, unless I just had a beater to play with, etc, it makes no sense to put more into a rig than its book value...if you wreck it, you're effed.

If I wanted a solid axle in front, I'd buy a rig with a solid axle in front, etc, rather than do surgery on the IFS...it makes no sense financially, for ME. If mine WASN'T a DD, and it WAS a trail toy, sure, I might accumulate parts until I had what I needed, and THEN do it. I ENJOY that sort of thing.

My X evolved because the Wrangler was too small...and I needed the X to be able to do what the Wrangler used to do for me, which was get me and my equipment into the boonies to set up monitoring stations, etc. Its a work truck.

That meant compromises. I was heavily loaded down, and while I wanted articulation, flexy springs with no "Road Grader/Load Leaf" could not come close to supporting that weight....and ONE set of AAL wasn't enough either, so I had to make a custom pack out of the OEM leaves and TWO sets of AAL...

Which was too stiff, and a bit tall in back...so I removed the Calmini shackles, and installed Revolver Shackles. These added back the flex, in spades, and, soften the ride out nicely (Hence why Goodyear called them "Velvet Ride Shackles" back when they invented them).

I needed to run some air tools and to at least be able to air back up after being off road, so the OBA was a natural addition when a jeep based group buy scored the Maxaire for ~ $100.

The wife was tired of me whacking deer and so forth on the backwoods that I have to drive, so I got the Shrock stuff and winch for birthday/x-mas...(I told Jim to tell her it came with the sliders and winch...)

;)

And so forth...I would see what I needed the X to do that it couldn't do now, and plan the changes to make it able to.

Rinse/repeat.

:D

I agree that what people do on a budget makes the whole thing more interesting, however this is more what would you do if you didn't have budget constraints (bills).

With unlimited money I'd be driving an Xterra/tank/1st class private jet interior off roading mastery beast.

I'd put in a PC based entertainment system, add inverter outlets, repaint, navigation, and a bad a speaker system. I've contemplated dropping (yes, I'm more of a streeter than off-roader) but I am spoiled with the ability to crawl under the X without having to jack it up.

X2 on the Car-puter. I have wanted one since I owned the X, however my budget only allowed for an in-dash DVD. I have thought about piecing together a touch screen and a micro-atx or atom motherboard. No matter how you slice it, car-puter in a box or custom, it's still going to run at least $600. If I had that kind of money to throw into the X I guess I would also be funding a second shop for RLC Welding. lol.

im glad to see people taking interest in this thread....its also not that i don't have money or budget correctly...im 22 with a girlfriend who is still in school, so guess who is fronting the bill:) I like your guys sayings" I'm building my dream" I like that! I know that i will build my dream! Its a little difficult being from indiana, and not seeing/ interacting with any other xer's! i would be very nice to have some help on these things. Like i said I've always wanted a lifted vehicle. Now its just within my grasp but i have yet to take the leap...I eventually want to make my xterra as cool as most of yours sit now! I have a hard time just splurging on buying things for my xterra because i can't afford to fix a mess-up! So my dream xterra rig would i guess what you guys have already achieved!

You guys never post up anything on that Pro4X :( just the original posts. Isn't her X named nasty or something like that?

Yeah, it's a DD for sure. I've taken it out on a couple of light trails before I had my surgery. I'm really wanting her to put the first scratches on it.

With all the armor that it's already got, there's nothing to upgrade any more.

And she's called Nasty all right. It's a tank. Although I did end up going off the driveway during the last snow storm (over 30") and ended up braking the synthetic winch line while pulling back at a weird angle. Was able to splice it back together. It just won't quit!

My dream X? Hmmm, well, truthfully, I am working on it, too. Now that I got my commuter car, I can play with the X a bit more in terms of beefing it up. I still make payments on it, so that is the priority. Once it is fully paid off, well then, let the fun truly begin!

I'm not so sure I want to go the SAS route. It sure makes the rig more capable in some areas and the ride is so dang smooth! But I just don't know. Currently I'm leaning toward the Titan Swap.

First things first, I need to finish armoring it up and get the rest of the skid plates on there. My local fab shop has the plans for the front tube bumper I want, with winch cradle and more driving lights.

My list:
- rest of skids (made locally)
-Titan Swap
-e-locker/OBA
-exhaust system
-Front tube bumper (made locally)
-winch
-Gobi ladder
-rear back up lights
-Nuvi system/computer for mapping (could care less about dvd stuff)
-custom roof rack (made locally)
-projector headlights (just b/c I can and I think they are so damn pretty)
-custom paint job to look like the Ford Explorers from Jurassic Park :-D

That's all I could think of....for now.
