Related but aside, my brain needs to work faster. I had a completely unrelated opportunity tonight and only realized 30 minutes later that I can do better.

You should get some Govee neon led tape and backlight them. I recommend that one specifically because it's addressable every 3 inches. So you can do the colors different in each area.
