I've spent many, many nights sleeping in the back of the first Gen. I used a 4in thick foam pad, plus a 3in self inflating mattress. It's a touch tight (my feet touch the rear hatch, and my head is up against the back seat), but very comfortable.
That being said, I have a rooftop tent up top now, so I'll be using that next year. I'm not sure I'm going to love it, with the high center of gravity, but we'll see.
