Fantastic work so far. Was wondering, in what state were your wheel hubs when/if you worked on them (I've been reading build threads and may be confuzzled)? I'm debating on servicing my hubs, calipers, and the lot down there but wanted to know if just replacing the hubs and rotors would be better.

Also, diggin' the pink trim work so far. Kinda jelly but mine will get there.

Thanks Gigashadow. My hubs are still stock and i have (knocks on wood) had no issues thus far. I eventually would like to go to manual hubs and upgrade them. But of course that is on the laundry list of things i would like to do to the truck.

I don't seem to be having issues with mine yet, but they're at 175k and I'm trying not to assume anything was properly serviced, in spite of what I've been told (I have yet to be wrong).

Anyway, this isn't about me. Imma be enjoying reading your build thread more.

I would not rush to do manual hubs unless you are locking the front maybe.

The manual hubs are less durable than the auto ones...and suffer more field damage than the autos....plus, you have to get out and manually lock and unlock your hubs.

They are mainly useful if you blow one side and want to dial it out, etc....and, really, that's about it.

A spare auto hub is cheap and easy to get...the manuals are more expensive, not readily available in JY, etc...and are more delicate.

I agree with tj... I have auto and manual hubs... The autos are nicer ex specially come winter time... Nothing sucks more then leaving your house getting on a snowy road And realizing you can't use 4x4 because u didn't lock your hubs

Eh, I've always had manual hubs on everything that I could have em on, and, when in doubt (beginning of winter) you lock em in, if you get ready to road trip, you unlock em, and then you have less rolling resistance and better fuel economy.

I have come to the conclusion that the auto hubs hardly ever work right.. Every time I see someone pull the fronts they fall apart.
And to the TJ thing .. He may be right.. But I did notice that my manuals locked in harder.. I could tell these by a bad cv clicking.. Maybe that's why people think they are weaker.. They lock in better and there for could break easier.

Naw...locked = equal locked...there's no "Somewhat locked".

:D

The CV clicks are often on the OTHER side btw.

The auto hubs work right pretty much always....but, like any part...any part can fail...I've just seen A LOT more manual hub failures on X's. Some of that is because they stick out farther, and whack more rocks and so forth too, which can snap the wee pins, etc.

The auto DO require some room to engage and to disengage, but, as you mentioned...if you lock when heading out, and unlock when you're done playing....its typically all that's needed, and, if you have an auto hub, its the same...get into 4wd before you hit the trail, to lock them...and when you need 4wd, you're already ready to go w/o also needing to roll 3', etc.

The ones who get into trouble are the ones tooling along in 2wd all day, THEN get stuck in the mud, etc...and THEN try to get into 4wd for the first time that day...and CAN'T roll the 3' or so forward to engage the hubs.

:D

Well I noticed a difference instantly going from autos to manuals with the axel clicking..

Either way..

Parts are available for manuals.. autos or so so

Driver side cv shaft replaced.
Also replaced the u joints and man does an arbor press makes it soooooo much easier.

Today is simple green engine cleaning. And picking up new tie rod ends.

Well I can finally say that I have a furry co-pilot now!

Meet Norman! He is a 6 month old Golden-Doodle (A Doodle for a Doodle). He was also my birthday gift this year. Once he turns too I plan on putting him through the training and testing to become my very own Touch Therapy Dog (for my fibromyalgia)

These be sick yo.

Now with the ladder again, are you able to open the trunk door? Or is it shut due to the ladder? Easy to take off for late night grocery shopping?

The hatch opens just as it would without the ladder. The ladder is attached to the edges of the door so there's no issues with opening and closing at all.
