Idea for you: Hitch Mount Tire carrier

I am thinking about making one of these bad boys myself, and thought it was a good idea...(keep in mind here...I first posted the idea for the bolt on rear recovery points in your clubX thread...I got some good ideas sometimes :kewl:)

Using my logic for the rear recovery points: Many people want the style and function of some big ticket armor items, but don't want the expense of going all out. Maybe they don't wheel much, or maybe they want a tire carrier without spending 800 on an entire bumper. Many of us have trailer hitches anyway. Why not create a hitch mounted tire carrier that swings down, or to the side? If you install your rear recover points, you don't need your hitch for a recovery point, anyway! If you made it simple and lightweight, you could throw it on for wheeling and long trips, take it out if you need to tow. I think there are probably some of us that would use the tire carrier more often than we tow.

There are some cheap one size fit all carriers by Reese and Curt, but they don't fold down and KILL your departure angle:

There are some cheap, fold down alternatives for RV bumpers, but they lack good mounting options on our Xterra's. For the record, extensive Amazon reviews have confirmed that this type of fold down design can hold 33" tires with no issue. I would probably beef this design up some more, but it seems to have worked for a lot of people out there:

There are also some expensive hitch mount bumper/carrier options...but the price point makes it pointless to go this route instead of just building an entire bumper. The size and weight would also make it difficult to remove/install:

Only other place I have seen something like I wanted is at Knuckle Bone:

They are a bit pricey at $230, but seem well made. Maybe even overbuilt for what they do.

Seems a design similar to Knuckle Bone could be made for a lower cost. Using a hitch pin instead of the more expensive latch? 90 degree angle instead of the chamfer angle? Paintless options instead of a powder coat?

I think this product would attract the "middle of the road" off roaders and would fill a niche to compete with the "go shrock or go home" type of market that Xterra's currently live in.

$230 sounds about right for the material cost, labor and profit.

In your bold, tl;dr section, I'm not sure what you're trying to say with the three questions. Are you comparing them to products already available; which ones?

That was specifically referring to KnuckleBone...and just ideas for reducing cost. I edited original post for clarity.

$230 isn't unreasonable for how it is constructed. The knuckle bone looks great...I was just thinking based on what I am going to be building for myself, and ways that I plan on making the fabrication easier/cheaper to carry out.

Even though the $230 is not unreasonable, once you get into the $200+ range, the thought of sourcing a local fabricator and building a full bumper starts to make more sense to me. You can't get a Shrock for 200, but you can get a local fabricator to make you a bumper with a very basic swing down for 400 or so. Why not spend the extra 100 bucks or so and get a full bumper?

As far as function goes, the cheaper tire carriers above can be had for 30-75 bucks depending on where you get them from, and internet reviews seem to verify that it would work for an offroading tire. The last piece of the puzzle is mounting them...and determining tire position relative to the hatch/roof line.

Surely there is a way to find a middle ground that is Xterra focused, more than 30 bucks, but less than 230 or so.

Just an idea...I've got my own fabrication tools, so I was just sharing the information I have found on researching my design, and where I think there is room for improvement.

I have a level fold-down hitch-mounted spare tire carrier currently designed and the design dropped off to the fab shop. Mind you, it isn't a priority, and they're in their busy season, but talking with them this week they'll probably get started on it the end of September/October. I did get a bumper built by them earlier this year (with a receiver built in), but I didn't want the swing out carrier that is typical. I wanted a different function and stype, and the flexibility to remove it.

I've thought of this exact same thing. I'm curious about the whole "flip hitch" for 2nd gen (if its even possible) and just getting a hitch carrier.

Good to know I'm not alone in my thought process!

I think it can be made fairly easily with some square tubing

Actually...I googled and found this thread from March of this year with some more tire carrier discussion:

For whatever reason, I can't find this one actually sold anywhere...but is basically what I would think is a simple design that could be made and sold for profit under $200. Simpler construction than the Knuckle Bone, but still looks pretty beefy. Tweak the angles so it fits against an Xterra hatch, reduce the draw bar length so it doesn't kill the departure angle, simplify the mounting plate maybe... I think it would be a good option for people not wanting the full expense of a tire carrier.
