HDR Photography

After seeing a few other xer's with amazing shots taken and post processed with a program called Photomatix I decided to research it a little bit. Shortly after seeing a few of their pics I noticed a new thread had been started showcasing some of their work (on tnx.) So I decided to give the free trial version of the product a shot and this is what I came up with.

Here is a site with some useful information on HDR photography, including a tutorial and a discount code for 15% off the Photomatix software. Photomatix ordering, also where you get the free trial site. And the discount code "STUCKINCUSTOMS"

It's best for other people to list how you took your pictures and to use a standard format when describing it. I'm stealing this format from Xebra67 *giving credit where it's due*

- Camera used
- Lens used
- f/stop used
- ISO used
- # exposures to get your result (optional shutter speeds)
- Software used (inclusive...Photomatix & Photoshop) to get your end result

This one has more of the HDR look to it and the next one is a little more natural.

Canon EOS REBEL T3
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
f/4.5
ISO 200
3 Exposures: -1, -2.3, .3
Tripod
Photomatix

And this was the other I did.

Canon EOS REBEL T3
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
f/4.5
ISO 200
6 Exposures: 0, -1.3, 1.3 *those exposures with 2 shutter speeds to add to 6, 1/400 sec and 1/500 sec*
Tripod
Photomatix

Yeah, I don't wash my truck too much in the winter time, too dang cold. And I didn't mark down the settings when I took the pictures, I right clicked on them and the settings I took the pictures with were in the properties>details section.

Mac, that only works if you select to upload the EXIF data associated with that image. Also depends on what program you use to edit...most pre-installed photo viewers won't do it unless you download one.

Dave, I could show you quicker than you could read about it. I learned how on Karen's D80 before I got my D90.

p.s. ^^ that house is a SOD house. Yes, a real sod house. It was built over 100 years ago, and was abandoned less that 20 years ago.

This thread makes me wish I was not so photo stupid and that I wish I knew how to do this. As Dave said, it is hard reading to read camera/photo how-tos. :(

Keep up the awesome work! Hopefully someday one of you can take a pic of my X and make it look pretty in a photo, bwahahaha! (I kid)

I'm still in love with this thread. I just signed up for a digital photography class so maybe my basics will catch up to the point I can take some pics worthy of making hdr.

I wish I had better news for you, but to get "the best" results from that Mark II, you are going to need to jump into the 'L' lenses.

I do have an L-series lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I had to choose one lens when I first bought the camera that would fit "most" of my needs and it fit the bill. I really wanted the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM II as well but couldn't afford it and saving my pennies for it later.

edit: I just know I need to study and play around with it more.

Sweet! You're all set! That lens will cover 95% of your shooting needs. If you want the 70-200, get the f/2.8 non-IS version. It's a grand or so less and works great! I've been shooting it for almost a year and it's amazing! You won't need IS...dog in a full sprint:

wow, I have looked at the non-IS version and was kind of iffy about it. That picture right there is worth a million answers to my questions. Where about did you purchase that lens? I am wondering if I can rent one to see what it is like. Thank you for the advice Xebra!

See who has the best price with free shipping between Adorama, B&H, or Amazon. I got mine from Adorama. I also just shot a few photos at a friend's wedding with the 70-200 non-IS...loved the results.

Having said this...I am back to using my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM on my 5D Mark II...I LOVE this lens! It was amazing on my T1i, I shot my daughter's birth with it, and I'll never sell it.
