Fuel Mielage on the Pro-4X vs. 2nd Gen 2WD

Ok so here is debate. I am starting to think that something could be off with my fuel mileage. I am averaging 15mpg on city driving, with very little stop and go. My wife swears that on her 2WD 2nd Gen she got over 300 miles to a tank. Granted she would take it to the low fuel light and then some sometimes, that still seems like a pretty drastic difference. I am just wondering what others are getting? Based on the mods I have done I am not losing anything compared to stock, so that rules out that part.

I do around 15 in the city with very little stop and go. My highway driving I can almost squeeze 20 out of it.

If she has a ~ 21 gallon gas tank, 300 miles is ~ 14 mpg.

I get about 15 city too, but I don't have a 2wd and I like the skinny pedal. Oh and I've got added weight of an aftermarket bumper. Shoot, I'm happy with 15 lol. On highway mileage I usually stick around 20 or 21. I even hit 22 on a stretch in New Mexico on my last trip.

When my 2wd was stock I was getting up in the 400 miles per tank range. Now w/ mods I get 10 mpg in the city and 12 mpg on the highway. But I like my skinny petal too

We're fully Shrocked, 285/75 BFG KM2's, all the heavy armor underneath and we live at 8000 feet in altitude. We're getting around 14 if we stay in Denver all day. Climbing the 2700 feet to get back up to the house out of Denver kills our mileage so we make our trips into town count. But in the summer, we drive our other machines for the mileage. Our classic Beetles run 36mpg (for the wife's '76 fuely Super Vert) and I get 39mpg in my '66 Beetle.

So if you want mileage, park it on the nice days. If you want balls out, go anywhere and pick up a murder of stranded Ninjas, then drive the X. Or when it snows out.

I regularly get 350-375 miles per tank. I have gotten over 400 per tank twice, on long highway trips. My X is 2wd, lightly modded with 33's and a 2" lift. The reason the 4wd 2nd gens have such a big difference in mileage from their 2wd-only counterparts is because you don't have selectable hubs like in a first gen. So when you're in 2wd the front tires are still turning the front differential, and that creates a lot of rolling resistance compared to a 4wd truck that has the option to free-wheel the front wheels. Add in the weight of the transfer case of the front diff, and that only kills your fuel economy further.

yeah i get around 300 a tank of all city but thats if i get the light on, and ive got sliders and 32, freeway seems like it depends on the way the wind blows Haha. Hwy With the sliders and 32s i probably average 17/19 if the wind is with me then 21, with it blowing over 80mph+ at my face like 14 gobble wyoming sucks.

I average 15-16 on strictly city driving never going over 50mph, and it's a pro-4x with sliders only and I drive pretty conservatively. Best MPG I have achieved is 19.6 on a trip to Knoxville.

and I believe I read somewhere the fuel light comes on around 4 gallons left, so I usually fill up when it comes on and get anywhere from 255- 270 miles per tank

The fuel light is controlled by the computer and is related to your driving habits. If you're a light footer, the light will come on when you have 2-3 gallons left. If you're like my wife and have a lead foot, then it comes on when you have more left in the tank, 3-4 gallons.

So if the light is on when I'm driving, then my wife gets in and hammers down, she'll run out of fuel quicker. I like to hyper-mile when I can. She doesn't.

When I had my '05 Frontier though, I once got over 26mpg on my way to Amarillo from Denver. But it's a lot of downhill driving and it was just me. I was doing everything I could to get what I could get out of it. Had a hard bed cover, lifted on 285/75's with stock bumpers.
