I looked around the forum and didn't find to much about this.
I was wondering what the best/most popular first mods for the Xterra are. Particularly the more inexpensive ones like body lift, painting the raised part on the hood, which parts of the bumper to cut for clearance etc etc...
I have an 03.

I'm wondering what I can shave off my front bumper like you did and have it look good. I have the X with the round lights and little different front end.
Sorry these are the best pics I have right now. I'm hopefully getting the X this next week and bringing it home.

Yeah I would say painting plastics too. It makes your truck look so much better, nicer, and more expensive (if you know what I mean)
After that, if your looking to better your offraod performance id remove the rear sway bar, step rails, and mud flaps.

Ya sounds good. Il paint all the plastic black(maybe bed liner even) and the steps mud flaps and stock roof rack are gonna go. Soon as I can I'm gonna body lift it and put 33s on it Til I have the money to do more like SAS.

Sounds good! Just remember a body lift will create a bumper gap between it and the body but Im 99% sure the stock ones can be relocated with some brackets for cheap.

I just read that somewhere and ya it sounded pretty easy to lift the bumpers. Thanks for the heads up though.

Best first mod would have to be lockers, not the cheapest mod, but it will get you the farthest down the trail. Bald street tires with lockers will do better than open diffs with a good MT. But the biggest thing that you can do is decide what you want your x to do and come up with a viable build plan from that point forward.

Start with good recovery points, front and rear. Realize that you will get stuck and the easier and drama free the extraction is the better.

Other than having the rite state of mind, you don't need to change anything to get out and enjoy your truck in the woods, or beach, mountains, ect...

Solid axle swap would be the "BEST" my reasoning.
1. no more crappy steering components
2. no more crappy ground clearence
3. no wasted money on IFS lift kits
4. Rides smoother when done properly
5. it will ACTUALLY FLEX lol.

I know its not a real economical first mod but you asked for the best lol.

Lol. Once I get back on my feet from the hole I'm in right now from military issues i'm def doin a SAS and replacing the rear with full widths and lockers etc. the X will eventually become a dedicated trail rig/project. But for the moment I'm tryin to find ways to make it look good and be capable to go play in but still be good on the road as a DD. for now.

Cheap first mod... the 3 Baffle/resonator delete. Took me way too long to do it but once I did I saw a difference instantly. Cost was about $6 give or take.

You have to pay for some plugs, and you feel a performance boost, sounds a bit nicer, and it cleans up the engine bay a bit

CB radios are fairly cheap too.

Ya I have a couple cb's. A nice cobra and a cheap one. Il just have to find a good place to mount it. I think my cheaper one is small enough to mount in the dash. I've seen a couple pics of people doin that.

I haven't seen on on here, but here's a link to the process on CX: http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2192 Only difference I would do is instead of the 2" test plug in the main intake tube, use a 1 1/2" threaded PVC plug and put a hose clamp around it. The 2" plug split my tube, and wouldn't even fit in a new tube.

I used baffle/resonator simply because I didn't remember what the actual names for them were....lol
I bought 2 plugs from Home Depot. a 1" and a 2" (I think) my have been 1 1/2 & 2". I had some high temp gasket silicone laying around already.

The difference is that the engine breathes easier, throatier sound both intke and exhaust. Better pedal responce. These are just my opinions concerning my X. Others may have had different results.

Theres alot of descent cheap mods i suggest if you want to go offroad at all the idler arm brace should be very high on the list.

The idler arm brace huh? How much does that usually cost?

That stupid little brace will save you from constantly dealing with fubard steering.

That's good to know. Thanks. What exactly does it do that helps out so much? Just stronger hold or what?

Yeah basically stops the idler arm shaft from bending or flexing or worse.

Some look fancier then others but they all do the same task.
