CaptainMorgan_SOS's Official Build Thread (finally)

I already know all the issues with Calmini. I already bought the Calmini kit like a year ago and it's just been sitting around my garage. I have thinking about going 3 link over using the Calmini kit and just selling the kit.

I understand the theories behind all the geometry and such but have never done it in practical usage. That's why I originally went and bought the Calmini kit but I have been doing lots of research in 3 link and the geometry involved and I am starting to think about doing a custom 3 link.

My understanding is the Calmini system is OK so long as you stick with 33's, but doesn't cut it when you go bigger. Caveat - I am relaying info and have no personal experience here. Casper and Grandpa would be the ones who could speak directly on it.

Haven't updated this in a while. There have not been as many huge changes to the rig, but it is still constantly changing, little by little.

I've definitely been wheeling it plenty. There are a lot of trails out here. These were the only ones I got of the trail after the last photos on this thread:

After this, because of issues I was having climbing ledges (LSD was no longer cutting it in the front) and still rubbing in the rear, she went under the knife for a minute in order to throw in the winch, front locker, new light bars, add some leaves in the rear (I regret that decision; lost a lot of flex out of the rear) and also the further trimming of the rear fender wells (can't go anymore unless I want to start cutting into the rear doors).

Rubbing...

I wasn't able to get too many pics out at GONE. But here are some of the good ones:

Seriously, this was May... Why in the world was it snowing, in New Mexico, at the end of May?? This is what I woke up to on day 2 of my trip out to Moab:

I'll tell you what, never has there been a co-driver better than this guy! Curtis was out there helping every single person out on the trail, whether he was spotting, helping with repairs, or just there to keep company. Really good dude!

The guys stayed out on the trail because the rain made it too tough to push forward. A couple of us ended up leaving for the night so we could return the next morning with the fixed/new parts.

The next morning, fixed and ready to rock and roll again!

Flat Iron Mesa. Probably one of my favorite trails. Not really difficult but a lot of fun.

I'm really not too sure who this crazy person was. All they did was yell at people and tell gibberish, fantasy stories over the CB

Steel Bender. The one with The Drop.

Had to catch up to the rest of the group; Kane Creek was called off, but we still had fun catching up to the group.

So then after all the fun and games at GONE, I made it back home. But, I still had the itch to wheel some more. So after meeting some guys out on the trail as I was driving back home from Moab, we camped out and then hit another trail in the morning. I say hit the trail, actually, we just created a new one.

A little different scenery than Utah

I climbed this but couldn't make the sharp turn at the top, need to work on this a little more, so I had to back down and turn around. We'll work more on this another day.

I was the only one to go up this trail since it had never been run before and we needed to test it out... none of the Jeeps wanted to do it :) But, what the pictures don't show is that some of the rocks shifted a couple times and I about rolled it a couple times from the front falling into a hole. It seriously worked up my nerves. Since I have been out doing all of this stuff lately, its time to relax for a bit so I am taking a month or so off wheeling in order to focus on school and hang out with the wife and kid.

Plans for the future include installing the hydro assist setup (that I bought LAST YEAR at GONE), a roll cage (a little ways down the road, unless I flop it sooner), upgrade the stereo system, clean up the wiring, throw on some rock lights and maybe re-do the front and rear bumper to gain better approach and departure angles. But before any of that, I need to add some transfer case gears. THis thing does well, but it just doesn't have the low down torque I would like to have for a lot of obstacles. I have my eye on a particular T-case with gears already installed with an SYE... just need to get rid of some stuff in the garage before I can pick it up (wife's orders). Also, later on down the road, I'd like to do something with the rear suspension so it can match the performance of the front; I can't do that until this thing no longer is used for DD duties and I get a tow rig.

So this was PART of what I had to get rid of so I could work in the garage again...

I bought it from a friend for $200 who got a short notice assignment and was about to just take it to the junkyard that offered him $75. By the time I sold it all and parted it out I made about $2,500 (it had no engine, transmission, driveshaft or axle...). Now I just gotta get all of the workout equipment (dumbbells, elliptical, plates bars, etc.) out of the garage. I've got a gym close by now so I don't really have any need for them. Anyone need any dumbbell pairs ranging from 75-150 lbs each or 500 lbs in plates? ;) I WILL NOT ship them, haha.

Captainmorgan I just thought I would pop in here and say that you have built a beautiful beastie there. Very nicely done. I will hopefully find a nice Xterra here soon and start my own journey with it. I love that SAS you did and the truck looks very capable. Like the color scheme too on it. Anyways at the risk of sounding like a kiss ass there it is... LOL

Haha, no worries there. He's used to the Xterra community internet fame by now. And knowing that his truck is the thing of sweet dreams.

I appreciate the compliments, but I cannot take the credit on the SAS; the guys over at RuggedRocks did me a solid and put in the work on that. Kenny is a phenomenal fabricator and Steven is a really good guy to work with. Besides that though (which is really the biggest part of the whole build), I've done the rest and busted quite a few knuckles on this thing. It is a very capable rig on the trails and is a lot of fun. It's a little finicky on the highway, but on the really long road trips, it seems to get better as the trip goes on. I'll keep tweaking it here and there because I can never leave things alone, but as it sits, it's a solid platform and good wheeler/my DD.

AWESOME X man! I'm a relatively new owner of a 02 silver X and I kid you not I had the exact idea with the blacked out hood with the orange pin stripping around it because I'm planning on accenting with orange as well! I just ordered my black vinyl for it today and I was searching for orange pin striping tape and came across your X and was like "NO WAYYYYY!!" Seeing it on another X makes me so much more excited to get it done! I was just wondering where you got your tape at and what size yours is? Thanks! And again, incredible X man!
