The basic frame is a HF 4x4 that I picked up cheap, when it was bolted together I went through and braced it and welded all of the connections along with all of the nuts and bolts. I did order a 3500 lb axle with the correct length to fit under it. The rest of it is just made out of angle iron and plywood.

There are a few things like two receivers in the back. One that was part of a reciever bumper that I made for a camper that someone never paid me for. The second one is the actual reciever and rear bumper, that was recycled off of an only stationwagon that had a class v on it. That one is tied to the frame in the back, and to the toung so it is a direct line through the trailer to the tow vehicle.

I made it light enough that I can move it around loaded by hand, as long as it is not like a load of firewood or something

Just finished looking around the internet checking out stuff to do a trailer like granite's and he has the right idea. Harbor Freight has a 40 1/2 x 48 trailer for $279 and a 3500 lb straight axle is $285 from red trailer. All you need then is your new tires and the material to finish building, assuming you have a welder or know someone who does.

I have definitely found my new project for when I get home.

WOW!! Just my style :D

I could probably get a local fab shop to help me out with the rest, since I do not know how to weld.

Thanks!

A trailer like this is the perfect project to learn how to weld with. Everything is out in the open, and you can flip stuff over to get the angles that you want instead of trying to learn to weld upside down.

I have an F350 and a 26' TT already, but am thinking about doing a small of-road teardrop type unit.
A long time ago, i worked at Utility trailer, building semi-trailers. Used to build quite a few enclosed, flatbeds, ATV haulers, etc.

Still have enough aluminum rail extrusions, z-posts, panels, etc in my shed that I could do most of one from that and have a very lightweight but solid unit.
I just like the idea of an instant camp/sleeping qtrs regardless of how late it is or what the weather is doing, compared to a tent or popup.
Warmer, More secure against predators (however many legs).
The wife is just too spoiled to sleep in a tent. No heater, hot running water/shower, toilet...

No guarantee if she'd use this either, but I think it would be fun to build. Be great to run up to Alaska in...

You're looking to make an Alaska run? I too am considering this, need to get a trailer first but id like to take my wife up there since shes never been.

The primary reason we purchased our Xterra was to tow a popup. We had a Subaru Forester prevously, that we loved, but it could not tow much. Here is a shot of our camper on the last trip we took.

It is pretty good size. Two queen beds on both ends, table, and a u-shaped couch on one side (supposed to sleep 7 or 8). Stove, 20 gal. water with electric pump, fridge, and heater (very handy this particular camp-out). Has spare on the back, two propane tanks, and trailer brakes. Dry weight is just over 3,000.

Nice setup you've got there. Who makes the camper?

Very nice... Is it one of those that has the hidden toilet so you can do your biz while you eat at the table? LOL I saw those at the last sale i was at and i said no way in hell was i going to get something like that. Id rather have the extra weight and a semi private bathroom than that.

Nope, no hidden toilet or anything like that. We looked at one that had a shower/toilet fixture in it, but it looked like more of a pain to maintain than I was willing to endure. Plus, I asked my wife if she really wanted to use it with just a curtain between her and our two boys. We didn't buy that one.

Haha! Yah my wife wouldn't be able to have a bathroom like that in the same room. We've got a tri-pod toilet with the little bags and a shower tent that works great as a porta-pottie so I'm keeping my eyes out for a small one with ac but no toilet. If only I had money....

So far we have camped where there was at least an outhouse, but have been thinking of some kind of shower tent setup for more primitive camping.

Best time to start looking on Graig's List is probably about now. People will be selling their older ones for newer or larger campers. I got a great deal on mine from a couple that could not go camping anymore due to medical problems. Once people start pulling them out of winter storage the adds start popping up. You never know, you might find one you can afford.
