Have the dude meet you at a notary and get a notarized bill of sale that includes the year, make, model, & VIN. Then you can apply for a lost title. There's some hoops to jump through. You have to send a registered letter to the owner in the system (if there is one) wait 30 days then you can apply for a new title. If there is no registered owner in the system, you should be able to use the bill of sale as proof to apply for a title.

Real life problems. Ice maker in the fridge decides to dump all the ice in the world at once. Clogged the chute and yells at you. The second you take the handful of ice that didn't fit in your water bottle to the sink, another flood of ice crashes into the kitchen floor.
