At the time the first couple X-men movies seemed pretty good, but next to nothing was being made so there wasn’t much to compare to.
The first X-men movie was amazing. DOFP was awesome. Logan was brilliant. Those are the three stand outs to me. First Class bringing in honorable mention due to the requirement to reboot the franchise with younger actors. Michael Fasbender as Magneto was a wonderful choice and he was responsible for carrying that series.
In fact, one of the reasons that DOFP was so good was that it bridged the gap between the two generations of X-men films so well. It was a tribute to the original films while ushering in the new generation in a very proactive way. And actually stayed kinda sorta close to the DOFP comics.
Dark Phoenix could have been a great movie if the 3rd act wasn't such garbage. IMO they tried to hard. The first two acts were on par to be an amazing X-men movie. Aaaaaand then the 3rd act ruined everything.
Don't get me started on Apocalypse. One of the most prolific villains in X-men history boiled down to 30 minutes of dying. I feel the same about that one as the 3rd Rami Spider-Man movie and Venom. A total disservice to the idea and the character.
