bought a very shiatty vw baja super super cheap (like nice dinner for two cheap)

because i wanted the wheels on it for a different vw project

after i had the tires broke down, I found that this raggedy bitch had three of the same wheels on it, IN THREE DIFFERENT SIZES

so now i own a shiatty vw containing 90% of the worlds rat shiat, sticks and rodent skeletons and no usable matching wheels.

Even as cheap as it was, I feel like I took a very solid L

You know that points out to me how very long it has been since I've seen a baja bug - Like 70's camaros running skyjackers they used to be everywhere now you can't find them

Yeah. One of my pulleys (probably the tensioner) has been making noise. So I'm guessing the pulley wobbled enough that it walked off the belt when I floored it to get on the interstate
Oof. No bueno. I had something similar happen in my blazer I had several years ago. I had to run to the store in a snowstorm, and on the way home, I lost all power steering and the engine temp started to climb. I managed to get it home before it got to hot.

Turns out my idler pully had hobbled off, and sheered my serpentine belt.

On the plus side, I'm finally starting to feel a bit better. Stupid sinus infection.

You don't carry a spare?
shiat no. It's a 40-50k change intervals & belts are by no means a special order part. Even if I had a spare, I wouldn't want to install it on a hot engine. And my insurance covers the tow truck. As far as I'm concerned, I only lost an hour of my life.

New tensioner assembly is $65. Gonna double check my theory tomorrow.

What if you were miles from pavement at Moab when that happened?

There's at least two in the parts storage we have in Moab. So if I needed one, I could get it. It's just not something that I constantly worry about.
I've always kept my previously removed belt as a spare, in every vehicle I've ever owned. It's too easy to just toss under a seat and have it if you need it IMO.

I was at the BC Overland Rally last weekend in Merritt. While there I met a guy that had just done a VW 2012 tdi swap into his 2003 xterra. It was very nice. I should have taken some picks of the engine, but did get his contact info. And the wife told me to stop looking at her car, 2001 VW golf tdi.

I get that. Might make sense if I had the old belt. Haha. It's just not something I worry about. Even when the bearing in the pulley started squeaking, I knew this was an eventually. And I said to myself, I'll deal with it when the belt goes. Haha.

I think I'm going to get the OE tensioner. The one on the truck made it 160k before it needed dealing with. I like that kind of security.
