I want to step up to 33's on my rig (07 x)and am thinking of getting steel wheels (like the full spare) that can accomodate the new tires. I want to know what the best combo would be, a 15" steel wheel with a 33" tire or a 16" wheel with a 33" tire. Anyone know what tire sizes are available for either? any recommendations?

humbly, bubba

From what I've heard 15"s are the cheapest when it comes to buying tires and they have the most options. Steel rims will hurt mpg too they are heavier than the stock alloy.

From what I've seen you spend more $ on the 16" tires then the 15". But most people run either a 33x10.5 or a 33x12.5 tire on a 15x7 to a 15x9 wheel for the 15" wheels.
And heres the best way to mess around with sizes is to play with tirerack.com sizing charts. (What I did and how I learned :D what will fit and wont fit ect. ect. )

Awesome everyone. Thank you. You're giving me more info than I got in months of gleaming over other places. That's why I joined!

I was looking at 4wheelparts.com at the Pro Comp wheels. It asks for spacing, bolt pattern and diameter I know my bolt pattern is 6 but don't know what the spacing should be for a wider wheel. I read about the 6 on 4.5 bolt pattern for stock wheels. I'm not exactly sure what that means. What do I need to consider when buying these wheels? In the meantime, I LIKE those prices I found I on tirecrawler.com for the 285/75r-16. . I might be able to do this sooner than later.

6 is the bolt pattern, 114.3 is the spacing from the center of the axle hole to the center of each lug hole. 16x8 would be a 16" rim with a 8" wide cross section. 4.5 would be the backspacing (don't know if that's stock, just an example).

Lotta numbers you need to find a good wheel that fits.

Another question for you experts...
I too am looking for some new tires. I currently have 265/70R16 General AT2 tires on factory rims. '05 Gen 2. I am hoping to find a set of 33's, used on rims for cheap. My plan is to throw the 33's on when I go wheeling and use the AT2's for my daily driving. My truck is lifted (bought it that way).

My question is this: I see alot of tire/rim sets for sale that are from ford trucks. Can I put those tires on my truck or by an adapter that allows me to bolt the ford wheels on my xterra?

Thanks in advance.

Nope.. You will need to find the newer lug patterns.. 6 lug 5" I think.. A Gen 2 guy can pop up on that one..

KEvin keep a eye out for a good MT tire.. That Generals you have are weak sauce :)
