Questions before you snork

Looking for input here from those of you who have DIY snorkels. My need (want) of a snorkel has recently been re-kindled (thanks Steeze) and I've had the snorkel head for a long time now, so why not just do it already?

I don't plan on going up the a-pillar at all, I already find the a-pillar & window vent visor combination to be a huge blind spot, something I don't want to add to at all. I want to keep the snorkel head as low and close to the fender as possible, but I'd like to still use the snorkel head I have. I'm pretty sure I've figured out just how to go about doing this.

I know a piece of 2" ABS (or PVC) pipe will fit right up to the normal inlet hole on the air box, which is cool and all, BUT I have an idea for a really easy way to open that hole up to 3", allowing me to use 3" pipe and elbows, and eliminate the need for a 2" to 3" adapter to attach the snorkel head.

Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? I realize that the air going into the engine is still going to be limited by the intake tube from the air box to the throttle body, and I'm not specifically trying to increase air flow by going to 3". If my idea plays out, I'd have very little room left for a 2" to 3" adapter piece, so if I can go all the way from the snorkel head to the intake box with 3", that would be perfect.

Is there actually enough room between the inner and outer fenders for a piece of 3" pipe as opposed to a piece of 2" pipe?

I too have looked/read alot about "Snorks"(funny), and all I've read/seen 99% all use 2". The one that used a 3" pipe cut then hammered the inner fender to make room. Now to be honest I liked the 3" better in the end but still I opted to buy the external snork for it's ease of install.

Thanks for that input! I've also only seen 2" used, and wasn't sure if that was just because of the 2" opening, fender clearance, or some other reason.

Bump.

Anyone else? I'll be heading to the hardware store to get parts to fix my toilet, and while I'm there I may as well get some snorkel stuff too :D

As I recall from reading numerous DIY snork posts elsewhere, 3" is a tough fit under the fender

That's what I remember reading, too. I had an idea to get 3", heat the middle section (away from the joints) and squash it oval, but I didn't want to complicate it. I went with 2", and managed to forget a 2" end cap. Ah well, another trip it is.

3" is going to be really tough to fit and it would require a lot of cutting and definitely some beating on the inner fender. 2" is definitely enough...

I used 3" as we'll, seems to work much better then 2", comparing the 2" to 3" the 3" is the way to go, opened it up and breaths much better now, also when I had it low and just popping out of the fender it was a bigger blind spot then running it up the pillar

I know your wanting the DIY but just for input I have the external snorkel and from the inside all you can see is the front of the snorkel head if you look up to the top of the windshield.

Thanks for the added input guys.

Luke, how hard was it to fit the 3" behind the fender? I assume you did the same amount of cutting and pounding that Curt showed in his pics?

Big_THanks, thanks for that info about visibility. I was playing around with it yesterday and I could see how it may not get in the way all too much.

I have to get back to the hardware store for a 2" cap for the 2nd opening on the air box, I may as well grab a couple 45° elbows while I'm there, that way I can play with the idea of extending the pipe all the way up.

The ***** was getting the airbox to attach to the PVC.

I re-read where you were talking about that, having to modify the 90* bend to fit and all that jazz. I'm pretty sure I have a way to remedy that. For now I'll be doing it with 2" but it still leaves the door open to upgrade to 3" in the future if I get bored.

I want to be out there working on it right now but Allisonn has plans with her mom today so I'm on kid-duty; and the poor guy's got a nasty cough (damn daycare buggers, haha).

Honestly, I hardly ever see my ARB snorkel unless I'm outside the rig. Here's all you can see while driving....
