New tires?

So apparently in Alaska, no one carries and can't order my tires so I'm out of luck with only needing to replace 2 tires, now I have to replace 5 tires, 4 minimum. So I was looking at these tires: BFG KO AT 31/10.5/15

I see a lot of people running these tires and for the price, it's pretty damn good. But I guess I'm just not knowledgeable when it comes to tires.

Doesn't the tire I run

Look more capable then the BFG TA/KOs?

I see there's a little more space in the tread that makes me think it'll grab better than it being close. Anyways, is the TA/KO's a tire to go with?

Tires are a touchy subject. Personally, I hate the BFG ATs. To me it's not really an AT. It's a slightly more aggressive Street tire. I've seen more people get stuck with them than any other tire. The lug spacing is so tight that it's difficult to clean them out if you really need to. The tire on the back of that FJ looks way more capable.

The KM series are much better off road tire. Though that does come at the cost of street longevity.

I've been EXTREMELY happy with the GY DuraTrac tires. I've got around 20k on mine and they still look and perform great. Granted, 90% of the driving I do is on pavement. But regardless, they've held up great.

I like my KOs.. But I will agree in mud they don't clean out the best... I still went with them on my gen 2 knowing it would be on the street more than off road. The new KO2 is due out this fall..

The duratracs are a great hybrid tire.. My only issue has been cutting sidewalls.. The 15s have a three ply sidewall ..
Other sizes have more.

To me both of these tires are the best all around tire out there for off-road / on road use

I love my BFG A/T's but 99% of my driving is on road. I do love the looks of the duratacs and when I need a new set, I'll go with them.

Duratracs - meh.
Been there done that. I would choose them over BFG AT KO's any day. That is the most over rated, under performing tire ever. Duratracs are pretty good in the snow. Otherwise, they are average at best in other situations. I found I had to balance, rotate and align my suspension religiously to to keep them wearing evenly. They do ok off road but they slip on stuff that most tires do not. I also find they are just as noisy on road as MT's. I put Nitto Trail Grapplers on my X and couldn't believe the difference. AT KO's and Duratracs will never go on my truck again.

You know that's the first bad opinion I have heard about duratracs. I'm picking mine up tomorrow

Yea the first tire that's on the FJ is the tire I run with. Unfortunately, friggen Alaskan shops don't have these and can't purchase them so I'm out of luck with these! I haven't had a problem with these tires yet and now I can't buy them!

I may have to call these mechanic shops and just ask what tires they have that they would highly consider for my price range and for off roading. Sigh...it was so simple when I could just buy my Kelly Safari's....

I'm running grabber at2's and I have no complaints as of this far. With that being said I was running pretty much bald tires for awhile and only been off road 1 time since getting these but they seem to do really good and I'm only 2wd so tires mean the freaking world with my rig lol

i have the grabber at2s as well and i love them. I like most people run mostly on road but i got about 25-30k miles on them and they are wearing nicely. i highly recommend them to everyone. i know ill run them again most likely.

You will like them. They're not bad in my opinion, just meh. I would consider them for a truck that is 95% or more road in a snowy climate.

On a dedicated trail rig? Yes. Absolutely. No question. When I had my 32s, they were terrible. Can't get a better off road tire. But for a truck that touches pavement, they just didn't hold up. Which made me sad. Because the original MT/Rs were epic all around.

The main thing to decide is whether to bias towards on or off road use.

As discussed above, AT's are more road biased, as to work well on the road, and on harder packed snow, you need a tighter tread pattern. A tighter tread pattern is not as good off road, as it packs with mud, etc.

AT's tend to wear longer, for example, most guys get ~ 80-95k miles per set of BFG ATko's. They work well on the road, but not as well as a dedicated road tire. They are aggressive for an AT, but, are not MT. They are popular for DDs that off road, as the work on and off road, but, not as well on road as a hwy tire, and not as well off road as an MT....a compromise.

(Jack of all trades, master of none)

If you go MT, they are not going to work well on road compared to an AT, as large rubber knobby tread blocks simply don't work on pavement well, etc. They WILL kick ass off road though, as that's where those large tread blocks have something to grab/sink into.

If you go HWY, they will suck every where except on the road.

So, its not AT ko vs MT, its on vs off road bias. If you are willing to give up ON road performance to maximize OFF road performance, you want MT tires. If you want to retain more ON road performance at the expense of some OFF road performance, you get AT tires. If you want ON road to be maximized, and the expense of all off road capabilities, you get HWY tires.

And so forth.

im gonna throw out the cooper discoverer st maxxs

They perform nearly as good as my stts did, takes a little more skinny pedal to get them to clean out, but not nearly as much at the bfgs. There wearing like a champ, I'm at 25 k on mine and they still look nearly new. My buddy just put a set of 31x10.50 on his taco, after seeing mine put through the ringer.

There basically coopers version of the dura-tracts, I haven't ran a set of goodyears, so I cant talk to how they compare there.

I keep mine rotated every 3k also

Damnit why is it so hard to buy tires here???? I'm going through the ONLY mechanic shop in town that has positive reviews and they're taking FOREVER to order tires!!! They're apparently looking them up and seeing the price and seeing if they can order it. A day goes by and I have to call them. Then 2 days go by, have to call them again. Now I can't call them today or tomorrow because they're closed. Seriously, I need f'ing new tires and I need them ASAP. Tired of getting the run around. I'm going with: 31X10.5R15LT C General Grabber AT 2 Reviews are pretty damn good as well as the price for them. Size is bigger than my Safari's. Doesn't look like it has aggressive tread but I'm seriously stuck on tires.

Generals are good, on and off road and price is good too.
How about if you buy them yourself and have them shipped to your location (ebay or amazon)?

I have read that duratracs are one of the best tires but they worn faster than most. Supposedly avg of 40k miles. My neighbor uses relugiously BFG AT KOs and he hss gotten as much as 80k out of a set.

So I actually just bought 4 Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 31X10.5-15. I'm going to see how this works out against my Kelly Safari TSR P265/70R15's. I bought them through Tirerack.com and am having it shipped to University Chevron to have it installed as well as getting some general maintenance done. The damn shops in Fairbanks wasted too much of my fricken time so I had to do what I had to do. So the tires are a little bigger than what I run but I've been told they WILL fit on my X. Might have to do some shaving on the rear areas but I can care less about that.

Yes I have looked into that. Unfortunately I didn't find a set of tires that were in my size in my specific brand. All the Kelly Safari's were going to be 31's and it was going to cost me about 1.2k to buy (including or not including shipping). And I live about 2 hours from the nearest large city. The post office near me is a very SMALL post office that would more than likely NOT accept large items like tires to be shipped there. And I can't have anything shipped to my actual house because of where I live. So I'm out of luck there. Anyways, even if I could, it would cost A LOT to have it shipped to me. I'd rather have it shipped somewhere where they can hold it for me until I get there then install it.

I've had my Duratrac 15x31x10.5 for a few years and had no lift at all (now I have the 3" Calmini Susp lift). The first time I put the larger tires on (years and years ago) I did cut some plastic in the fronts (minimal) to allow for turning without rubbing - but nothing was done in the back. Mine is a 2000 - so I'm sure it would be the exact same for you.

I've attached a picture to show what they looked like stock.

The 31s will fit great. You might have to trim the back side of the wheel well plastic ever so slightly. I'm running 33s and I've never cut anything in the rear. Good choice ordering them online. I've always found that's the best way to get tires.

Okay so here's what my tires look like! So the first two pictures are of my front tires, and the last two are of my rear tires (one of each but that's what the look like on both sides). The first two make my cringe every time I see them LOL

33s on stock rims actually works really well. The 7" width keeps the sidewalls pulled in a bit more for better clearance.

WOW I am such a failure LOL Apparently the tires I had on were 31's in the beginning, which I guess I was looking at something else on the tire (the P265/70R15) and in the middle of the tire, it said 31X10.50 which is the size I just bought. So I've been running 31's and didn't even know lol anyways, at least now I'll have 3 spare tires instead of 0 when I thought I was getting a bigger size :) Anyways, I love my new tires :)
