alright guys and gals need your help. buddy's gf wants to buy him an xterra for xmas but she is limited. first x has 181k miles on it but the outside is flawless. both xterras need new tires. good thing is my uncle does engines for a living so if the motor went bad i could hook my buddy up. and i know how much transmissions are also. roughly 1700 for a rebuild. it ran smooth check it out and seemed to be ok. The second x has 95k miles on it, but as you can tell its rough around the edge really rough. i can do most of the painting or help him out with it or he can maco it for a couple hundred. it's missing come parts but i already found them in a junkyard so they aren't a problem. we'd be cutting the front bumper off anyway and making a new one so not an issue on that part either. It ran decent. i got them both down to around 3k any other suggestions or advice is appreciated thanks.

Did you personally lay eyes on the first one? Looks like they used 2 different trucks for pics..or at least replaced the wheels.

The first one, if it's truly been maintained. It still has lots of mileage left on it.
Without actually seeing the service records I would be skeptical that the 95k version has been maintained. Certainly the exterior hasnt been maintained. It wasnt even washed for the photo. We may also be looking at the difference between "maintained" and "properly maintained".

What about this:

The 95k car seems priced low relative to other similar cars in that market, even considering the needed exterior work. If it were me I would pass on the 95k one. Smells like trouble. Not sure about the other one, i would defer to our gen1 crew on the forum.

I'm intrigued by the 2nd, but only because it has such low miles. That is looks like it's sat in the sun for 2 years, is missing several pieces of trim, needs to be repainted and the front bumper is rusty concerns me -- they may be signs of total neglect, or the previous own may not have cared about appearances.

think so? i've always wondered how far these vg33 motors go. i sold my first one just after 130k miles and when i bought this one it with a replaced motor.

208K and still running strong, no signs of abnormal wear in the engine. Oil test report

The cosmetic stuff is easy man, especially if he's going to get into modding. Half the guys round here love painting and decaling their X's up. That would be a nice start to build thread for him. He could trim up the front bumper a little so it doesn't look so shaggy, especially if he plans to lift and all that fun stuff. I'd go with less mileage one, I'd just check underneath on em both, make sure the one with less miles isn't rusted to crap or something. But I think a diamond in the rough right there, otherwise.

I agree completely with mudchet...it smells like trouble...I will say drb is on his second "high" mileage X... The first one I was VERY concerned with high mileage ... Both have been great trucks...I wouldn't be scared of the mileage..I'd be concerned about what else hasn't been kept up if it hasn't been maintained externally....who knows if it sat those extra 90k miles while the other one was on the road...and if it sat...why it sat and what other damage was done while it sat...

You've got a lot of great peeps on here that have bought high mileage and have great...even AMAZING rigs.

Disclaimer :). Although with any used vehicle you will have your surprises...but, you already know that :)

Good luck!

Since I own a 220k Xterra I will say your just in time for a few issues to pop up... Distributor.. is one that comes to mind..
As longas you know when or replace that Timing belt right away you should be pretty good.

I have had mine for 9 years and have 238k. Still running strong. I had a frontier with the same motor with over 300k. (Had meaning my son totaled it). I wouldn't be afraid of one with high mileage.
