Has anyone removed this thing before to know what's between the map lights?

I'm thinking of a future rocker switch location that I won't accidentally hit, and there is room for one switch up there, if the temp/compass display doesn't go down that far.

I have. There's a bunch of electrical crap behind the center of the unit, presumably to do with the temperature/compass readout. If you can get a finger tip behind the edge of the thing, it pops right out, it's held into a hole in the metal of the "sub roof" with two or three metal clips. I guess if the backside of the switch is shallow enough you could make it work, but you'd have to disassemble the unit itself to get to the back side of the plastic body of the console. Too much of a PITA for me personally, but anything's possible if you want it bad enough.

That's what I was afraid of. I didn't want to pull it down unless I had to.

I'm assuming you would do the same thing to replace the bulbs in the lights?

Pretty sure. I don't know if just the lights come out from the front or if you have to pull the whole thing.

I had to run out to my truck for something so I snagged some pics. It's actually more cluttered back there than I remembered, haha.

Yikes...definitely not enough room for an illuminated rocker..too many extra wires coming off the switch, not to mention the ones for the compass display and the map lights.

Thanks for that, btw.

No problem. I was pretty disappointed myself to learn there wasn't even enough room to hide a quarter back there.

Does it appear easy/difficult to disassemble to paint? I went to Home Depot earlier and found the flavor of Rustoleum I like, and I got to thinking that my trim pieces could use a fresh coat of paint....I'd kinda like for everything to match.

I honestly didn't notice if the back was screwed onto the front or if it's held on by plastic clips. Once I pulled it down and saw the mess I just kind of stuck it back up and forgot about it. The wiring harnesses should just unplug and the lights should be easy to mask with painters tape...

You know what though, your interest in the console has rekindled my interest in it, haha. I really want to find out just how much room is behind the stuff in there, I have a few new ideas stewing.

If/when I tear into it, I'll try to remember to get some pics and post 'em here.

so back to the map light question. has anyone ordered or tried the different color ones on ebay. the "led map light" was interested on trying them, but just wanted to see if anyone had already done it.

I'm without sensors in my 02, blank space. Tossed in three small switches to control my lights. Like it, but I'm currently looking at picking up a new center console from a junker mini van or something.

But to answer question. I modified some led bulbs to fit in there

I ordered some amber LEDs for my map lights to match my amber strobe lights. They haven't come in yet though. Got them from superbrightleds.com

I have white 6000k LEDs in all of my map/dome lights. Picked them up from v-leds.com. They're awesome bright and much better to look at than the stupid incandescent bulbs of death which I loath so much.

Btw, totally and completely jealous of your compass/temp readout. If I knew how to retrofit that, I'd be on it.

I put my LEDs in a few days ago, haven't had time to get good pics and update my build. They fit very nicely, and the amber is a good match to my interior strobes. Very bright, they light up the interior nicely. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow night I'll be able to get pics and update my build thread.
