Just thought I'd ask... Does anyone have the general measurements for the Skids or know where I might find some?

I'm going to make a set since it seems most are specific to what front bumper you have and wheither or not you use the factory rad/engine skid. Since I currently have a Shrock w/ a OEM rad/engine and will be going to Custom front w/o OEM, I need general measurements to spec out material.

I need one too I bent my tin OEM one up at gonemoab a few years ago. I'd start with some 3/16 steel sheet and go from there. I have considered making a frame work out of angle iron welded to the frame then using flat sheet steel bolted in place. The oil filter is a pain to reach and would make a mess if it was behind some unremovable cover. Hence why I ride around without a skid. I'd probably ride around with the steel plates out of the framework. Then when I want to wheel for the weekend reinstall them. I have a oil pan skid which is entirely basic, minimalist and light weight. I personally just need something made to stop the front belts from filling with snow in the winter time and deflect rocks from catching that front cross member. If I did it again I wouldn't make a gas tank skid. There is a ton of weight that goes into skids. I haul that weight around every day but can't say I've ever used it. Even at gonemoab the contact was minimal. To not kill my mpg's and power I've kept the skids at a minimalist level. Better then stock but not by much. Just something to keep in mind depending on your planned usage of the vehicle. I know you'll get a bunch of guys in this thread from east or west that will think I'm nuts but in the midwest ain't much rocks.

, Ben

My problem is that I have a hard time designing something w/o a visual reference. I've never actually seen skids on an X just pics. And depending on the pic angle, you can't see everything.

I've got a general idea from looking under Steena now, but would really like to peek under someone who has them to see bolt patterns/placement and take measuements.

Kinda funny actually, ever since the wife got me the welder, I wanna make everyting myself. Sliders, Rear bumper now Skids, Front bumper and Roof rack.

All I need now is a tube bender and a break.

So go to skid row's website and check out the shapes of all their skids, give you an idea. I have a full set on mine, In addition to the aluminum per-runner plate on my front bumper. ALL of my skids got used at MOAB, running red trails, including a nice long scar on the gas tank skid. The oil filter is still easy to get to behind the front rad skid. I'll try to take some pics later today. The only pita for me is changing gear oil in my manual trans. Have to remove engine and front skids to do it.

Thanks, but don't take pics...I've seen pics of trucks and pics of skids on websites. Only seeing pics is part of my problem. I need to see and measure, get an upclose and personal visual on them. be able to touch, feel, get thier vibs, pass on their vibration of creation...oooo that rhymes...lol

What do you need?

Just trying to find a local GEN1 w/ a full set (preferred but not required) of skids or some specs somewhere for them.

Basically get onset the truck and measure from crossmember to crossmember, that's where they bolt up, some places you could go wider then 24" but its been enough for me

I went and bought a 24"x48" sheet of 3/16" steel and that was enough to do the front and engine skids

OK...this is a start, thanks.

Added: I looked thru your build...impressive, what were the bolt thread sizes for the skids(if you remember). I'm guessing 7/16" or 9/16" and M10? I've got "a few" 1/2" grade8 nuts/bolts/washers sitting around doing nothing... lol

3/16 seems to be the normal standard plating for bumpers. Would 1/4 be better for skids?

There's a few places you will/can use pre-existing holes, I believe they are 5/16" , 18 pitch thread, but I'd want to double-check that. New holes I drilled for various skids also were 5/16". The engine skid used ubolts on the front side, secured to the cross member.

3/16 is plenty thick for steel skids, IMO

i wouldnt do any thicker then 3/16" its plenty strong and also plenty heavy, Idk that I would even be able to lift 1/4" plates up to bolt them on

After working with 1/4" plates and tubes for my sliders and rear bumper...I should know it's a PITA to cut and drill through. So, yea... I agree, 3/16 for skids...lol
