What works without all the problems? Volant seems not the way to go. Safari seems harder by those that have done it. So what else is there? It was mentioned that instead of Safari, to go with the more expensive one, but it wasn't memtioned.

I started this so as not to thread jack.

4x4parts sells 2 for the Xterra.. The safari is a hard install.. And out of the 2 they offer it is the better one.. Voilent doesn't make one.. Just the airbox

Steeze had a DIY one.. where you just seal up the stock air intake, and then run the actual intake through the fender.. but I am not sure if that is what you are going for.. That gets more into the RAM air intake opposed to the CAI

Zachbz with the SAS rig did some type of custom paint can air intake that you might be able to run to a snorkel. I think it was over a CAI just to guard it from water.

I'm just trying to get an understanding of what the problem(s) is(are).

I looked at the AC ones. When you open the box the Snorkle is all you get, true?
So, If the snorkle is installed w/ oem airbox everything fits (but now water can pass thru and sit on the bottom).

The issue now is to upgrade to correct the water problem. The air filter and box need to be changed. This change is where the Volent problem comes in.

Is my understanding correct? or what did I miss.

See I was under the impression a CAI and Snorkle went together as in the samething. You had to do both at the same time. But I think now that isn't so since AC corrected the problem for the Volent GEN2 and not the Volent GEN1. Has the 100 watt bulb turned on or just the 25?

The stock air box will fit up.. Not well.. The hard part to the install is knowing where to cut.. I plan on doing a write up to this when I'm not working 60 hours a week..

I did not want the snorkel for water crossings.. It's really not what the snorkel is all about..
It's made for clean air to enter the motor.. I still need to finish modding my air box.. I'll post it all up soon.

I think I'm getting this now.
There's no template w/ the snorkle to show where to cut. Also it doesn't 100% fit up to the stock airbox.
The Volant prolem is just an additional issue caused when it's brought into the mod complicating thing even more.

Yeah I don't have a aftermarket air box right now.. But from what I understand is some have had issues with how low that airbox sits.. There is no templet with the safari snorkel.. It came with a foam outline that mounts between the fender and snorkel.. You can cut sorta from that..

The biggest issue that morb and I'm sure others have had... Not really thinking this out before cutting.. And I'm not trying to insult the others that have done this before..
I looked and thought about it in my shop for about a hour in a half before I ever cut.. After doing the install I thought about the issues.. You could make a templet off of the back of the snorkel..

I found a DIY on this I'd suscribed to. Reading thru it I figured out what is causing the problems in general. IMO the problem started when the Volant box was brought into the picture. After that, things mushroomed and took off in another direction away from the intent of the DIY. If the stock airbox is used as in the DIY there are no fitting problems.

I know this doesn't fix your issues, I believe your issue is as a result of the mushroomed idea. I just needed to find out what the root problem was and avoid that if I wanted to do this type of mod.

I have the TJM Airtec Snorkel on mine working with the factory airbox. I was able to make everything work with that snorkel. The one problem that can result from the Airtec is the lack of air flow that you require with a snorkel. If you compare the Airflow to the Airtec you will see that the mouth on the airflow is much larger than the Airtec. The basic tubing of the snorkel is relatively the same except with the Airflow its a straight shot for the most to the intake tube with only one 90 degree bend in it where as the Airtec has three 90 degree bends (not as direct).

A fix that I have been looking at doing is swapping out the intake mouth on the snorkel for a Land Rover style pre cleaner. they are only about 50 bucks or less to replace. For the installation portion of the snorkel, the Airtec comes with a disgram you can tape on to your fender and drill holes with, I wanna say its 7 14mm holes and the giant 86mm hole for the main tube. It does not come with the A-Pillar diagram, you will have to figure that out on your own. I removed my weather stripping and cut the hard plastic around the windshield as well as the weaher stripping around the mount. There will be two screws that go in to the A-Pillar and i believe are either 4mm or 6mm hole. There is a giant hole in the factory air box that was meant for one of baffles, you will need to plug that. I used a thick piece of Plexi-glass and drilled a few holes in it for screws to hold it in place and then sealed it up.

Another thing I had to do was take the factory "T-Pipe" as it is commonly referred too, and dremel out the inside as well as cut off the bend on it. This can be hard to do because if you cut too much off you will be going to nissan to buy a new one. After your take some of the inside of the T-Pipe off you have strech the hose around the intermediate pipe on the snorkel and make sure to seal it all up with some heat resistant silicone. Ive had mine for close to 3 years and not had a problem. If youd like and when i get some free time i can take pictures of all of this stuff and post up.

He is iffy on his design. He was asked about how it was holding up and he said he didnt like it as much as he would have liked. Its in his build thread on CX. I'd link it, but I'm on my way back from a job in Memphis and using my phone.

Yeah, don't link it. People can find it if they need to. I'm guessing the issue has to with using tape on the open end of the paint can? I'm still stuck on this mod...trying to think of an alternative to the paint can for the cai "coverup" cylinder...
