Want me to prove you wrong? All of us know that destroying axles can be done on a D44 or D60. I have seen it. Our local shop here who builds $60K rigs used to have a D30 on his truck, had 35" swampers, huge offset and beat the **** out of it and could not wreck the axle. However any axle when the wheels are turned, your locked and you give it too much gas will tend to destroy parts. I am not doing any major rock crawling, I beat the stock IFS up, put it through its paces and never had I destroyed it until 2 months ago when I pushed her too hard. Some of us can't afford new D44 and D60's so all I ask is that you keep on doing what you do best and I keep doing my build. Lets see you chop the back off an xterra and make all the mounts and brackets from scratch. That takes balls, maintains a budget and makes it fun! That's what makes this sport so fun. As I said before right now the D30 goes in and when I have more money a D44 goes in. I appears you had not had a chance to read my build thread.

Dude chill out... You come off worse each time you try to defend the Dana 30. We get it you will prove us all wrong... I can buy either axel for 150$ all day long..

Now back to this "sponsors" thread

No I am not. It's just unfortunate that the axle was given a bad rap over time but I guess some really hate them and some say they are OK. If I come across so strong I apologize. Just getting tired of hearing about this. If for example 0.01% in the world fail can't be bad. If it gives me alot of grief then yes it will be replaced. Constructive criticism can be good or bad I guess.

Enough in this thread. .
This is a debate with no winners or losers... Time will be the true winner here .

I will give this a day then clean up any chat that has nothing to do with this build

Honestly, I didn't know someone on this board was doing a D30 S.A.S. or i would have worded my response a bit more polite and I apologize for my word choice in that post.
However, my response clearly lit fire under you and clearly you've had issues with people telling you that a D30 is a weak axle.
If you want to run a D30, go ahead.... no one is stopping you. Over time, one way or another you'll learn what you will like to run under your truck.
I have a hunch that the D30 won't be the last axle that you put under that X, just like your friends that USED TO HAVE Dana 30 axle under theirs.

I've grown up with people that used to wheel D30 front axles. one that still does but not without consequences. After a handful of unit bearings, a few sets of ring and pinions, and few sets of axle shafts
a D30 starts to look a bit different and opinions start to change.. I've been there when carnage happened replacing balljoints at 2am atop a ridge with 60MPH winds and 20* weather before windchill.

I have experience with Dana 30 axles, and I don't like them.

Also, I'm not sure where the "Lets see you chop the back off an xterra and make all the mounts and brackets from scratch. That takes balls, maintains a budget and makes it fun! " comment came from.. as if all of these parts were sourced from other vendors or something? we make every part and take the time to make it nice.

A few pics from the windy night from hell / D30 Breakage:

A few other SAS'd Nissans that we've had a thing or two to do with if not full builds:

This was a pathfinder, cab was swapped:

If a mod wants to delete all of this tangent..thats fine... or we could even split this off into another thread and archive it.

Steeevo, What are your plans for the rear cross member that is under the rear drive shaft? With the increased lift in the back the driveshaft will hit that member. I assume the new driveshaft will go under it and then the crossmember gets re-shaped with a "U" in it? I am facing this issue now when I get working on the back.

Steering Knuckles are on, and the hubs 'n spindles are together for the time being. they'll come apart again when the 3rd members go together and axle shafts are installed.
It's carrying it's own weight sitt'n on those sway a way coilovers!

Although we still have a number of things to do, It doesn't need jackstands!
After some minor preliminary fender trimming, we threw the wheels n tires on, and stood back to take a look at it's current stance, which came out really nice.
It's slightly taller due to a minor design change in the shock hoops over the design that we used on the pathfinder. but the height definitely isn't way out of the park and lines up perfectly with the simple spring over conversion out back.
The spring over conversion on the rear was done with just a pair of leaf spring perches and relocating the shock mounts. Nothing super special is happening for the rear suspension for now but there are some plans for the future.

O. M. G. That thing is beautiful!

I am curious to see the final shape of the fenders however. Because that is going to take some serious cutting in order to stuff those beastly tires.

We wont be cutting anymore than we absolutely need to and the factory shape will be retained as much as possible. Fender trimming seems to be a form of art.

That picture looks so deceiving with regards to tire size! Hard to believe they are 37's. What kind of height are you getting from the bottom of the rocker panels to the ground?

Looks good.

These goodyear 37's are huge! haha. These are actually larger than the 37" BFG KM2's on my pathfinder.

Once everything is done and back on level ground I'll post measurements.

I think on the MTRs that they HAVE to be bigger than the size they say. The 33s look like 35s

The X really does look natural with tires that big. I'd like to go up to 37's eventually. Especially if I keep hanging out with Steven.

Can't wait for measurements...

A couple of Qs;
Will this eventually be a kit?
Are you running the same Cragar soft 8s that everyone else is? 4.75" of BS?
How far forward is the front axle from the factory location?

Nice truck

Got any pictures of how you did the upper track bar mount on the drivers side? Particularly I wanted to see the frame inside edge. Your one pictures shows the outside edge, but curious how the inside is attached. I am at that point where I am lining up all the geometry and it appears the motor mount(on the inside edge) is in the way a little bit. Did you mount yours to the frame, just in front of the motor mount? Thanks, and keep posting the pics, nice build. ETA on completion??

All I keep thinking is... I just paid off my last truck... This is doable. :) Then I remember I'm getting out of the Marines in a few months and need a job... still doable. :)

Not even going to ask for a rough cost yet. If it's too low, I'll start spending money now. If it's too high, I'll get a ****ty job i don't want, in order to be able to pay for it.

There isn't an inside edge and does not interfere with the motormount.
Eta for completion is late this week.

Damn you. I should have never clicked on this thread.

Would Rugged Rocks make my X super sexy if I sold a kidney? I've got one to spare.

Lol we can build another one. This is all reproducable and will be available as a kit as well.
