Gas mileage

I have a S/C 2002 automatic transmission xterra. Gas mileage has been hanging at approx 13 mpg (ranging from low to high 13 mpg but never better than that). Is this normal? I did have the knock sensor code and just recently relocated the ks and cleared the code. Hoping this gets me a LITTLE bit more mpg's. Any other suggestions?

A basic tune-up could help *SOME*. New distributor cap, wires, oil, run some injector cleaner, spark plugs.

That's about what I hover around. Following along with XTP_Dyer, here's what I would recommend:

fuel filter
distributor cap and rotor
spark plugs and wires (splurge a little bit and get the NGK Laser Iridium plugs and NGK wires)
transfer case drain and fill
differential drain and fills
K&N air filter
Seafoam treatment
clean the MAF sensor

Those things should help you out pretty good. How many miles are on your Xterra?

My aunt's 02 SC never got above 15mpg despite constant maintinence.

There's always a lemon out there..I used to have a 97' 4runner that on a stock setup after tune-ups still never got above 12 mpg.

Thanks so much! It has 121k miles on it. I got it about 6 months ago. Had one (not s/c) a few years ago and loved it. Love this one except for the gas mileage. I chalked it up to the super charger but if I can gain some doing a few other things it's worth a try

I mean, considering I have 33's and the full amount of lift, I can squeeze out around 15 if I drive easily. I do a pretty even mix of city and highway

are you running premium fuel? that will be the biggest thing to get your MPG up as much as possible, If you hit 15 your doing good

Yea I do run premium fuel. I guess I'm not doing too bad at 13 mpg considering its s/c with 32's and a 3 inch lift.

I get 13 on my 2nd Gen. I'm currently trying the whole premium myth to see if there is a difference in MPG's.

Premium and tune netted me 15 on my 2012. My 2007 struggled to get 12 untuned.

What are you guys tuning with? I have full armor, bumpers, 33's and I'm getting 15 city 19/20sh hwy. Granted that's with exhaust/ims/intake/bullydog premium tune.

Premium tune on Hypertech. I'm armored as well. Exhaust coming soon, but I also run 34s and average about 80 mph on my morning and afternoon commutes. It's all interstate.

Bahaha sorry. How much does your truck weigh? I believe the second gens Are significantly heavier too.

Stock difference is 400-500lbs IIRC.

The SC will suck some gas. NA 3" SL with 31's. 18 city, 22 hwy. No flat roads around here either. 4.63 stock gearing.

It absolutely should be. Ethanol lowers gas mileage in every vehicle.
