I know a few people were interested to know, after a full day of trail romping, limb scratching, mud slinging, dust covered fun, how the dip held up. Well, I got her all scrubbed up and used a high pressure car wash and didn't find a single scratch or tear in the Plasti-Dip. Everything appears good to go and the places where you could see the rubbing on the finish just cleaned right off. I feel like I can absolutely recommend this process to everyone. Keep in mind that dipyourcar.com sells a clear gloss as well, so even as a paint protector, I think the product has merit. I'd really love to do a mod day and help someone else do theirs. Bottom line from me is that the finish looks great, stands up to a decent amount of abuse and cleans well, I'm very happy with it!

Good to know! I was just wondering about the dip (you've been reading my mind.....lol).

Oh....and I will gladly volunteer mine for that mod day....:kewl:

Let's make it happen! Just order up your dip and when you get it we'll set up a day. It took 4 gallons to do mine, 3 green and one black.

If I weren't bedlining mine this summer I would so do plasti dip after seeing how many branches we hit and it didn't tear it.

I know that we're talking about extra costs and untested ideas, but you could theoretically dip your X in black, and then bedliner on top, that way it would still be plausibly removable... just a thought.

I really really love the Plasti-Dip idea and I know for sure mine will be done. I like the idea of it better than bed-liner as that stuff is REALLY heavy, and heard as hell (in my opinion) to clean. You Sir, have sold me.

Awesome! It'll be nice to see some other folks interpretations on what to do with the dip.

I could do that but I'm actually going to color match the bedliner so I can keep the yellow and then I'll spray every thing else in a black bedliner.

Everyone always worries about weight but I look at it like this... I never worry about how much getting groceries is going to lower my mpgs so I dont worry about bedliner weight since it cant affect no more than adding passengers or loading up a couple 24 packs of water.

I'm sure if you weighed the bedliner and plasti dip together there is not a huge margin of difference there.

I see what you're getting at here, but I can tell you that this is incorrect. Dipyourcar.com peeled an Audi A4 and weighed the dip which was 6 coats, and it came out to 1.5 lbs. From the website rhinoaz.com, a company that does spray liners (found on a google search) it states that a spray in bedliner (not a whole truck) will add 35 to 65 lbs depending on the size of your bed.

Damn I figured it was heavier, but not THAT much. I see what Big_THanks is saying though. When I was modding my truck I was always worried about weight, my friend used the same "passenger" analogy and I agree with him and Big_Thanks.

But all my mod weight adds up. I can tell in handling more than anything, and when a weeks worth of camping gear/recovery gear is added in, I've gotten where weight reduciton is starting to matter.

I cant say I know at all so I wont dispute I was more leaning toward the comparison of 24 pack waters but that stat seems way off to me on that high end.

My dad and I did a spray in liner in his truck a while back and it did not add that kind of weight to the truck. Heck the gallons of liner weighed close to the same as a gallon of home paint. somewhere around about 15 lbs per gallon so I mean you may gain around 30lbs of weight but to me thats not going to show a difference in gas mileage.

I agree that plasti dip is lighter just saying that I disagree with any weight issue arising from bedliner. Plus bedliner doesnt need 6 coats so you wont be using as much spray.

Your truck does look awesome though I may go that route on another vehicle.

No, I completely agree that, while there is a definite weight difference, adding 65 lbs. to your vehicle isn't going to make any real difference. Also, I'm not trying to "convert" anyone at all, end of the day, it's your X. I also think that while it takes more coats, the product consumption will be about the same, it only took four gallons to do the entire X.

Not to add to start a debate or anything kind of think of it this way. I say my bedliner altogether on my car weighs around 30 pounds give or take but the man thing is that its 30 pounds distributed over the whole area of the vehicle vs in one specific area like a tire or whatnot. I love the idea of plasti dip and all its coolness and how you can switch it but unfortunately I have a terrible addiction with bedliner and have since bedlined my whole xterra, I invented the bedlined headliner, I have also bedlined a ford focus, chevy c1500, and this summer gonna bedline my z71 Tahoe but on my newer focus I didn't plasti dip the chrome grille :)

Quick update on the Plasti Dip. I found two pinholes, one on each side, in the bottom six inches or so of the doors. They were easily repaired with Naptha and I'll put a quick spritz over them whe the weather permits. Also, there seems to be a slight issue with staining from mud. I posted up on the forums over at the DipYourCar website and got two responses. First, don't drive home from Tennessee to Georgia with mud on the finish... I knew that, but I didn't know where to go wash at. Lesson learned. Second, using a synthetic spray wax and a VERY soft cloth can help to remove staining in the dip from contaminants. I attempted this on a few panels in the garage tonight and it appears to work, but I won't know for sure until I can get it outside tomorrow. Finally, I have an extra gallon of green that I will probably spray on the entire truck in order to thicken up the dip because of the nature of where I drive. That's it for now, and yes, I still recommend this process!

Also, they say that spray waxing the finish BEFORE going off-roading will help protect and minimize any staining from mud... makes sense. :wut:

Thanks again guys. Updated the OP to have links to the mods I have posted pictures of and also clean it up a bit. Also added a "Coming Soon" section... and a Top Secret Mod...

Yeah, it's a PML. The dip looks a bit different from lighting and the fact that I treated it with Armor All.

A bunch of friends have apparenly decided that my Xterra's name is Liam.... Liam Nissan. I'm sure that joke has been done to death in the Nissan circle, but it still makes me chuckle.
