Thanks everyone! I got bored today and decided to do some prep work in advance of doing the dip. I painted the roof rack black and exposed the silver "X-TERRA" (at least on one rail, the other is still drying.) I popped the one that was finished on the roof and they're gonna look great, even better when the truck is green. Also, I got the great news that my tires are going to ship early! I'm thinking of doing the black hood bulge as well (in plasti-dip) any thoughts?

Welcome into the nation... Graveyard graphics sells the Xterra logo for the rack by the way...

Look through my build thread, I've got the bulge painted.

I like where you are heading with this build.

Roadwarrior, I've already read your entire build thread, lol. I'm thinking that I'm gonna go ahead and paint the bulge black and if I don't like if I'll just peel the hood and repaint green only. I have several ideas and concepts I'm still tumbling around in my brain so we'll see how this build evolves. A couple of other items I'm thinking of doing I'm kind of lifting from you as well, painting the gauge bezels green as well as the radio/comfort controls and possibly a 7.62 ammo can for the armrest, possibly even upholstering the top with the same fabric and foam we had on the seats in the HMMWVs as well... The logos will be black with hand painted lettering in green... Lol, lots of ideas.

Sacrifices must be made! Something I thought about was mounting it upside-down or cutting two in half and welding them together. The idea being that you could then just pop the latch and the hinge and remove it completely for off-road.

Alrighty, just a quick update. Got the bumper installed this morning at Tactical Armor Group and have a few quick shots I took when I got back home:

I got home with just enough time to stuff the wheels and tires in the truck and haul over to the family friend shop to have them mounted up and make it to class, so here's a little teaser of those...

Now you have me double thinking whether or not to going with a TAG rear bumper... I have heard and read some bad things, but that one does look really nice! How were your dealings with them? I really like those tires too!

What kind of bad things have you heard? I am fortunate enough to have them right in my backyard, so if it's shipping concerns, I can't really comment. But outside of that Kyle and his crew were courteous and friendly. Installation was included in my purchase price as well. Kyle really seems to know his stuff and he treats his guys really well. I was in the shop while the install happened and we just kinda hung out like guys will do in a shop. My first contact with Kyle went really well as we sat down to figure in all the options I was looking for and pricing was reasonable. Especially, as the website says, having everything be customize-able and there isn't a "Here's our bumper, take it or leave it." feeling. I did get lucky though and he had a customer return sitting as an "in-stock" that pretty much fit what I was looking for. All of the welds were clean and smooth and all the fab is done in house, but plates are laser cut elsewhere I believe. I'm looking into a rear myself, especially since I'm local, he said I can start with a basic bumper and upgrade over time adding the tire carrier and jerry can holders. I'm not sure what his lead times are on a build since I was able to get an in-stock bumper, but seeing as every plate and tube is bent in-house, welded-in house, drilled in-house, and built to individual spec, I can't imagine it is unreasonable comparatively speaking in regards to other manufacturers. All I can really say, is that I had a great experience at TAG and would recommend them and plan to return, I love the look of my new bumper. Only time will tell durability and longevity seeing as how it was only installed less than 12 hours ago, but I'm happy.

The issue people had was a really long lead time and then that timeline getting pushed even farther back when they called about it. That's great that they had one there to install on the spot!

Your X is coming along nicely; really clean looking. Any future mods planned besides the DipYourCar kit? I'm actually surprised you are going to do that kit since your paint looks like its in good shape.

I really can understand the long lead time though, every bumper starts as pieces and depending on your degree of customization (foglights for example) that's more welds to put in the buckets. Like I said though, shipping and lead times are something I really can't comment on. I will say that if you're local, you really can't go wrong with TAG. I actually got the shackles in today for the PML as well, so that'll happen soon. Down the road (in no particular order or degree of certainty) are the rear bumper, lighting, snorkel, suspension lift, on-board air, AC fenders, sliders. I'd like to start working on converting the interior to a more military feel as well, but I'm not sure how to proceed there.

As far as the paint, it is in good shape overall and I really love the color, but doing the dip is just something that I really want to do and in my head the rig looks beautiful OD Green / Black. I think maybe it'll be a bit more visible when I post up the pics with the new wheels/tires installed. I like the idea that it isn't permanent. I actually have a fair amount of experience with Plasti-Dip and love it as a coating. I've utilized it on everything from trim panels to R/C trucks and love the results and the ability to peel it all off and "return to stock" or start all over again with another color. The final push to get me to dip the truck was simply my brother getting me the kit for Christmas. It was kind of one of those things I don't think I'd really ever buy for myself, but having it given to me and having him say "If you don't like the way it turns out, peel it off and call it a wash" were the last little bit to make me go "Why not?"

Tag has had many many issues with quality, lead times, shipping... Way too many issues to name.. And speaking of name they had to change there name due to so many issues..

As long as your happy that's all that matters..

I hear ya drb, and again, on lead times and shipping I'm not really qualified to comment, and quality is just a matter of time and use. Believe me, if the thing falls apart, I'll be the first one you hear it from. But alas, I don't want my build thread to become a TAG discussion group. Right now I'm happy and if that changes, I'll let y'all know.

Blah...

PICTURES!!! I apologize for the low / no light garage pics and such, I'll take some more tomorrow during the daylight.

At least it still fits in the garage ;)

And man, those are some REALLY good looking tires. I wonder why I don't see more rigs running them? I'll have some very similar wheels on mine here in the near future, among other things. I understand your reasoning for doing the dip. Good luck with it; I'm sure it'll look great.

Thanks Cap'n. I parked it under the door and measured... I'm pretty sure I could do the the 3" suspension lift and still put it away!

I've heard of a few Xs running the RVMTs but not many. Read several good reviews and a few bad ones, but the "bad" ones were from folks who weren't really... qualified... Comments such as "I got lots of rear end sway on my 3500 Super Diesel Duty Dually and I was running these things at 20 psi!!" In general they seem to be on par with many other MTs, clean well, have respectable road manners and only moderate road noise (so far). The biggest complaint that seemed to be echoed in a few reviews was the fact that they were directional and created problems when rotating. I understand and accept this issue. One of the other complaints is tread depth, I chalk this one up again to unqualified reviewers since a few (not all) people who complained about it said that their Kumhos only had 15/32 brand new... A quick look at the specs page shows that the lowest available is 18/32, so their opinion already loses validity right there, but mine measured out at 20/32 and are spec'd at 18.5/32. Terrain handling reviews are a generally good as is treadlife with many reporting 40k+ life. Time will tell, lol.

I just want to say that I got wheels and tires both from Jeg's. The wheels were $84.99 / EA and cost $339.96 shipped. Yep, check the math. Free shipping. The tires were $199.99 / EA and cost $839.92 shipped. That's $9.99 per tire for FedEx's oversize handling fee, or $39.96 shipped. So wheels and tires shipped for $39.99. Also they have the full assortment of Black Rock wheels in every manner of rim size, offset and backspacing. Yes, everything ended up back-ordered or drop shipped, but invoice date to receipt was 9 days, and the wheels were in transit for 6 days only and the tires 3.

Yeah, I'm wordy... sorry!

New daylight photos:

I also trimmed down the front mud flaps in order to not have the exposed holes and also remove the rub. I did have to beat on the inside corner a bit with a 3lb hammer to get the rubbing to disappear:

That's it for now. The next two things on the horizon are the PML and dipping the car!

I'm excited to see the dipping take place! Looking good, man!

Let us know how those tires do off road! They look real good. I also like the trim job on the plastic piece behind your front tires. Well done.

Thanks Xado and casey. I'm really hopeful that tomorrow will provide a good day to do the dip, but we'll see. I just need the wind and rain stay away. I'm eager to get this thing out on the trail, but not yet having my winch has me apprehensive to go alone, not to mention I've never actually wheeled in GA. I did all my rides out in Missouri, California and Oregon, so I have no idea where to go. I'm planning on going to the PC ride in March that I see being organized on the seXTERRA page though. We'll see.

It definitely looks different without the side moulding.

You should really get to doing something about the color of the plastics. Heh. It looks like they are body colored.

New tires look badass, btw.

I started with the plastics, I'm on the final piece now, the grill. I'll start the truck immediately after. It will be done today. The dry times are incredibly short between coats.
