Well, its been like 8 months since I've had my Xterra, so I figured I would post a build/progress thread about it. Its not much, she's been a fixer upper so I haven't gotten to the real fun stuff yet, but I'll be there soon.

Here she is when I got her. She had like 150k(if I remember well). And seemed solid. Everything was working properly so I decided this was the one I wanted out of the few I was looking at.

After about a month, a friend of mine helped me with changing the timing belt and water pump. I wasn't sure the the previous owner had done it and he would no longer answer my texts or calls so I went the safe route and changed it.

After that was out of the way, I build a lobo rack and loaded it with camping and emergency essentials. Also removed the mud flaps and side steps.

I went ahead and got rid of the mismatched street tired and slapped on some Dynapros in 265/75/16, got a bit of rubbing but i pulled moved the front bumper behind the bracket at the wheel wells and got rid of the rubbing.

I had slowed down on the X a bit because I was starting a new job. So on my first day of this new job, 45 minutes away from my house, the Xterra decided to lose power, I coasted to the shoulder of the highway and then it died. Being my first day I had my wife pick me up, drive me to work and then she had the truck towed to a shop. It was a the shop for 3 days before I decided to tow it home because they couldn't figure out what it was. A couple days after I got it home I started messing with it and I couldn't figure it out, so my buddy who helped me with the timing belt came over and pulled the valve cover and saw this. LOOK AT THAT. That poor VG had never seen a oil change before I got it. He tells me the motor lost oil pressure due to the sludge and it died.

Now, I went ahead and bought this. A JDM VG33(with 40-60k miles, or so they say) to swap into it and get it back on the road. I also have two light bars, PML shackles to throw on as well as a sway bar to remove and t-bars to crank.

Hopefully the swap will happen this weekend and I will be able to update and post more info (which I couldn't find much) on how to make a JDM VG work in the USDM Xterra. I'm going to try to lift it and install the lights too, but thats only time permitting. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for looking!

I cried a bit. But hey, soon she will be running much better, and much more healthy. I just hope the swap goes smooth because I'm time crunched so and don't have much time to let it sit around while i figure stuff out.

Welcome into XN... KCCO man... nice BFM there..

Yeah that motor is pretty bad for sure... Did you not check the oil or anything when you bought it?
I bet you do now ;)

Cant wait to see the old girl back on the road

So, we started this swap. But we ran into a problem. We're working with the truck on stands, when we finally got to separating the motor and the tranny, it looks like we HAVE to remove the front diff, which due to the height, its next to impossible. We took off the starter to see if we could reach it from there but the bolts are too far in and the gap is too small to fit a swivel. How has anyone else done this with out putting the truck up on a lift? Anything I'm not thinking of?

There should be two plates between the trans and the engine with the starter bolts out and the lower bell housing bolts out I think the lower one of the two will come out giving you room to access the drive plate bolts. I'm guessing those are the bolts you are referring to/trying to get to

I didn't see those. I took the starter out and in the hole where there starter sits I can see the plate and the bolts but none of my sockets would fit in there to get to the bolts. (They're kind of at an angle so I had to use the universal swivel adapter or the swivel socket). Anyways. It's getting towed to a place with a lift. Hopefully it will speed up the process.

Ok mine had them when I pulled the engine so I thought maybe yours would to. If you look at your new engine from what I can see in the pictures the bigger of the two plates is already on it there should be one like that and one that is half that size between the trans and the engine. Did you end up getting the bolts out anyways? Or are you still stuck?

Sorry for the lack of update. I had no idea about the access plate so we had it towed to my friends shop(he works for a big dealership in south Florida) and he's been wrenching at it on his time off which is very limited but the motor it currently ready to be put in. He said pretty much everything had to be swapped from the USDM VG to the JDM one which was a pain.

Anyways, she should be back on the road on Sunday. Hopefully.

Good gobble man that sludge looks baddddddd. Makes me want to go home and change the oil even though I just change it :) I hope you looked in the valve cover oil fill hole of your new/used motor.

Ok so it's been a few weeks since the last update. I'm vary happy to say that's she's alive! It was a total pain in the butt, but the fewer miles and less money for the JDM motor compared to all the USDM motors I found in my area made it worth it. Since then, I've done a PML, chopped(trimmed) the bumper, installed two LED light bars in the front. (Went with the home made brackets but they're not very sturdy, ordered some from InSain Fab, should be here Monday. And pretty much just got the X back to normal, cleaned her up, put back everyone that was hanging on the lobo rack. Next, I'm gonna rhino line the plastics, maybe a CB radio and new speakers since some of mine are blown. Also, looking for a good deal on a roof basket to throw a full spare.

Here's some picture. Sorry if the pictures are huge or whatever. I'm updating from my phone and posting pictures is a lot harder that I thought it would be.
