How big of a chip? If it's only a little chip, run it. If you've taken a massive chunk out, then look at a pulley.

Maybe post up a pick of the chip and let us see it. I'm betting I've seen a lot worse running just fine on current vehicles.

I chipped mine but brazed the chip back on. If its bad they should be easy to source. Everyone who swaps the 3.0 for the 3.3 in the Z28's or early 4x4's tosses the drive pulleys out. Just a matter of hunting on the proper forum.

Ouch... I wouldn't run that for a second.

That pulley works as a harmonic balancer for the crankshaft, preventing the shaft from vibrating at certain natural frequencies that can turn the crankshaft into a grenade. If you look on the back side of the pulley, you will see a group of small pockets that were drilled out when the engine machinist set the mass properties of the part. Depending on the modal properties of the crankshaft/pulley assembly, you may be able to get away with using it as is but I wouldn't risk it.

that's about how bad mine was cracked too, I didn't think about running it at all. Just ordered a new one from a junk yard. Think I paid like 130 for it zzzz

so our engine is the VG33 correct? is there any other trucks or van besides the frontier that use the same engine? I will be hitting up the junk yard and was wondering if the pathfinder/infiniti or quests use the same engine maybe so i could maybe take it off one of those trucks

VG33 is correct

The engine was avaliable in. '96-'00 Nissan Pathfinder '97-'00 infinity QX4 '99-'04 Nissan Frontier, '01-'04 supercharged avaliable '99-'02 Nissan Quest & Mercury villager '00-'04 Nissan Xterra, '01-'04 supercharged avaliable

Not sure if the pulleys differ between models though. They should all have the same crankshaft though.

Here's a cheap one. Check over the pictures real good but to me it looks the same.

Ben

Mine looks a bit different than that one. The back side of the pulley doesn't have the spoke-like ribs. Also, the front and rear sheaves (for AC and alternator belts) are the same size and the middle one (for the PS pump) has considerably smaller diameter than the outer ones.

I would want to find one that is from another Xterra if I could... just to be certain that the balancing matches the crankshaft and that the timing marks refer to TDC for my engine. Not to say that other pulleys wouldn't work, I just don't know enough about the details to be comfortable making that call.

Yeah I'd be looking for the same if I were in your situation. There are a few xterra ones on ebay but they are near $80 but brand new dorman brand replacements.

Another option might be car-part.com for used parts if your yard doesn't have anything good.

Most places are listing the part as interchangable with the Frontier. So I guess a Frontier or Xterra balancer is what your looking for. Sorry to mislead you.

I have been trying to decide whether to have my engine rebuilt or get a replacement. So far I am looking at 2000-2500 to rebuild. If you had a choice would you rebuild or just replace?

I'd check compression with a tester then decide based on that how the internals are doing. Its not uncommon for these to run past 200,000 and still be in spec. As long as your engine has a had a proper service history I see no reason to start over just because the balancer is chipped.

If I was faced with a rebuild or replace option I would take the replace. There are still quite a few low mile engines available. Rebuilding you have to deal with remachining, possible poor quality aftermarket parts and so on. I'd avoid the headaches and search for a fresher block.
