Alright VAXC, you know the deal here. WENT is coming up - Registration is up in less than 60 days.

I know we have had folks go in the past in small convoys or solo before. But seriously, where is the fun in that? Why shouldn't we all convoy down together?

So here we go - the planning stages. First step - who is coming from where?

We have several regions in VA let I will break it down by area code for now.

Post up - let us know where you are coming from!

Sure. Works for me. It all depends on money this year and if I'm actually allowed to have leave for that period of time. I would like to go since I missed out on last years event.

no worries man, heck I am all in unless I get a doctor's order against it. So I get it, completely.

Since I am backing out of ECXC this is more probable. We'll see what the Navy has to say about my xfer. I "want" to make this trip because it's the last time I'll be close enough.

Yeah....I'm not going. Leave is denied. Denied for everyone. Isn't the military great :weep:

There is always next year man, no sweat. I missed last year because of work too.

Plus, I do have some plans for the VAXC next year, so there will be some more wheeling coming up.

WTF denied for everyone? Whats up with that. I haven't even put my leave in. To deny leave is a biiig deal, they can't just do that without a legit reason. Sorry to hear it.

Office is understaffed. That's pretty big when you consider that we are always under staffed - so it translates to we're almost down to a skeleton crew or barely enough people to make the OR function. My office screws people over all the time....it really doesn't have to be legit at all. I had my leave taken for this month as well...for what translated to no good reason / someone else wanted my leave (and got it).

Navy and Air Force are different worlds...trust me. I'd kill to be on the Navy side at this point. Hell their surgical techs are even trained better -__-

Who "took" your leave? Our CO's are the only ones that have the power to deny/cancel a leave chit. It helps that I'm a Chief too, nobody says **** to me when I want time off.

Flight Chief has that power. This one is a Master Sergeant so basically the same rank as CPO. I'm just a lowly Senior Airman (E4)...everyone says **** to me when they want lol. I have no power or authority.

Does 1100 miles sound about right round trip? I'm just putting together a budget to see if I can swing this trip. If My mileage calculation is correct it seems I should plan on about $325 for gas. I need to look at registration and camping fees. With this so close to my move I have to be careful with my savings. Anyone with experience with this particular event have anything that I should add?

From where we are it's about 1400 miles round trip. Especially once you figure in the trails, running back to town, etc.

If you're being budget conscious, you should be camping. You're looking at $18/night for a campsite plus your trail permits. Which are $20/person/day if I remember correctly. Registration fees, gas, food, camp site, tail permit. Take that all into account.

We are going to the camping route, huge tent so why not?

Tom is looking for people who are going to do the cabin thing though. I would hit him up if you are interested in splitting a cabin fee.

What up everyone or anyone. Have been to the event twice and to the park 3 times. I am in NOVA so count me in under the 703 as a YES for attendance. From me and about anywhere from here to Richmond its approx.. 8 hours / 500 miles one way no matter how you slice it. You can push through how ever you want, but the further down 81 you get the more frequent you want to stop especially when gas gauge gets around 1/4 tank cause of the mountains sucking it down and stretching is a must. Typically it takes me 2.5 tanks to get there then 1.5 on the way home cause of the elevation. But remember you will want a full tank when you begin the event and you shouldn't need to fill up again until you leave on Sunday. So definitely budget in 300-400 in gas alone. Camping is $16 per night and food is easy cause I stock up at the dollar store minus the beer or course and the event will feed you one if not 2 of the nights. So most of your food is consumed in the morning for breakfast, eaten on the trails or dining out in town which is super cheap. Friends and I always take advantage of the Kountry Kitchen for breakfast and an all you can eat buffet for dinner one of the nights. There is a permit required and I think its $75 for the year or you can get daily permits if you only intend to drive certain days. Always budget in an extra 100 for raffle, souvenirs and beer. All in all about $600 per truck. Of course that is divided significantly if you have riders bearing the costs with you. I know that sounds steep for an off road event. But if you have ever been, trust me you will find the money to come back the following year because the entire adventure of packing up for 4+ days, driving further than your local run arounds, enjoying endless trails (trails you may not even get to go on in the same event), talking truck shop with more than 100 other like minded enthusiasts, surrounded by mountain peaks and "eye truck" candy, picking up some kick ads raffle prizes to justify your expenses, helping out fellow drivers through the course or repairing trucks, meeting great people and showing off to your friends and family when major publishers post reviews about the event........

PRICELESS

Being part of the VAXC and showing up to a big event like this is no different than me wanting all of my friends to go and making sure they are ready. If anyone is interested, we can setup a time and place together and talk about what to expect, how things get shaken out and what to expect. We can take it a step further and review anything you want to get done to your truck in preparation of being ready and set up mods days exclusively to getting your truck up to speed.

I will be setting up my "AA" camping trips starting in August. If interested we can dedicate it to anyone available as a get your wheels wet for Wind rock prior to the event. This should shake the cob webs out, fine tune any adjustments and work out any issues prior to going.

The sad part is you will never be 100% ready because you will get there and realize what you like and don't like about your setup and come back the following year with something different. The good news is you will be surrounded by all the people you need to fix anything on the spot, give you the tools necessary to fix it or show you what you need next time.

No matter how many times I go, the terrain is nothing like we have here locally. Its not impossible, but allows you to feel more confident in your truck's capacity and your driving ability than what VA terrain has to offer.

Even at the $800 I am gonna set aside for this trip it is still way cheaper than ECXC. I had to back out of that trip because of all the fees and the trip up and back, I just couldn't swing it. A 4 day pass for the park is $55 according to their website.

Dan! Good to hear from you man! I will update the OP with your info.

Thanks for this input, pretty much what we were looking for from a WENT Vet.

I was planning on putting aside about $800 for the event, just to be sure. I know we are camping it and will be bringing food as well.

Random thought: you mentioned a dollar store, but I am hoping there are stores for ice and such nearby. Is there?

Rock on, sounds good to me. I mean since I am camping as long as I am near somewhere to get ice, I am good.

What's the weather like down there around that time of year?

Like everyone else said, Stores A-Plenty at bottom of mountain. Weather is always awesome. The event is perfectly timed in the weather shift IMO between the very end of summer into fall. Each morning there will most likely be a dew on the ground, by mid day you may feel you need to turn AC on if sitting in direct sunlight but my night its cool campfire like. Trailing is typically windows down head out the window looking at your store bought treads riding the rocks below or looking back at the chain of Xterra's in line.

That sounds like perfection, seriously. That is like, the perfect wheeling weather.

It is dude. Like I said, its the entire experience for me. I do my local camping trips here in VA and they are great for the weekend warrior, pack up and unload in 3 hours. But gearing up for a long distance, get me out of my element into some situations that are more challenging and rewarding than I can find locally and doing it over and over for 4 days.....well its a vacation. I am surprised there isn't a money back guarantee if you don't have any fun out there....hahaha

For all those planning on coming to WENT or those on the fence or those that want to be there but not in the cards this year, I will be throwing a 30 days before WENT (get're done) party. ALL are welcome to come and enjoy food, drink, DJ, beach, beer and boats. I will have my camper there for show and tell with a donation box available if anyone is interested in helping to complete it before the main event. It would be a great opportunity to meet and greet other VAXC members, discuss some expectations and make plans as a group for the event or bring together the troops for scheduled mods days prior to event. Let me know if interested, formal invitations via FB and evite lists will be sent out by end of month.

I recommend Intermediate as a group. The beginner trails are for the brand new X owners IMO. Typically the beginner groups end up on the intermediate trails by end of event. The night run is on an intermediate trail so might as well jump right in and get acclimated to those trails. Led by the best, a stock truck can mange these trails no problem.

Oh, right on. I just realized I was not clear on my post, lol.

What Intermediate group is everyone signing up for? 1, 2, 3, or 4?
