x2 on that, DIY can look good, but I've seen a few that look really unfinished, the eBay snorkel is pretty cheap too. besides, I'd rather drill holes that wouldn't be seen vs. cut into my fender and have noticeable cuts.

I've seen the Ebay snorkel first hand on Travis' X and it's very well made. Not only that but giving you basically a cut in half snorkel to use as a template is worlds better than trying to position and tape the paper template like mine came with.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've seen that thing before; it's a pretty good deal. I'm in a very "DIY" mood these days. I like that snorkel, but I don't like how massive it is. With everything I do to the X, the goal is to keep it as clean & natural looking as possible.

Still up in the air about the snorkel parts I have, but at least I have them if I do end up wanting to pull the trigger.

I love snorkels, but I dont completely understand the use. If you're in deep enough water to where you actually NEED a snorkel, I think it would have been better and safer to find an alternative route. Plus its bad for an engine to be submerged.

Right?

But I'm a hypcrite as I will most likely give in and get one. :p

Personally I like the way they look. I wouldn't install one just for that however. Even though I have a snorkel I wouldn't intentionally drive into anything deep enough to need it. The thing that pushed me over the edge on getting one was ending up with my hood partially submerged twice in a short time span. Both times were fortunately leaning towards the passenger side so my air box didn't go under but had it gone the other way it could have been disastrous. Hopefully I'll never be in anything that deep again but I feel better knowing I have a better chance of saving the engine if I do. Snorkels also act as a true cold air intake and tend to draw in cleaner air than you would from the factory location. That's why you sometimes see them on desert rigs.

More of a "Just in case" than anything else really?

Kind of like insurance. You hope you never need it but it's nice to have anyway. I will say I've done some creek crossings since installing the snorkel where I would have probably turned around without it. None of them turned out to be deep enough to need the snorkel but the added sense of security allowed me to continue on and experience some beautiful areas.

Snorkels are not for deep water crossings..
If you go in water that deep you have major issues..

When your on dusty trails the higher you can gather air the cleaner that air is. Most cars/ trucks pull air from a low part if the vehicle.
So when your with a few trucks in a line that's a ton if dirty air being sucked into the car.

The name is misleading then. :p

And I've seen some people in water up to their windshield, so obviously they think its for deep water crossing ahaha.

Right on sir... We just wanted to let you know of a cheaper way besides the normal 450

This is why you rock, Dave.

Kind of like insurance. You hope you never need it but it's nice to have anyway.

Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Life lessons.

When your on dusty trails the higher you can gather air the cleaner that air is.

Exactly. Nice, fresh, clean, cold air intake.

Time for another update:

Been a while since the ol’ girl has done anything except commute, so I put her to work.

And then my puppy wanted to help.

Finally finished installing and tuning the new CB, which is a
Cobra 19 DX IV.

Reorganized the cargo area and added a tool box. I enjoy orderliness.

And finally – took out some useless garbage. It was (relatively) painless, if the right tools are around…but well worth the ½ hour.

Mine may never get used for water.... But. If you are in a situation where your air box would normally suck in water, it can save your ass thousands of dollars.

When I had my YJ I was up in the George Washington National Forest and took the wrong line in a water crossing. Ended up with a chunk of connecting rod through the oil pan. After that experience, nothing that has 4wd will be snorkel-less.

Had a good run with GLX this weekend.

And then brought my new Hep rack home!

Popped my new Rotopax cans on there.

And then loaded that b!tch up.

And another shipment is en route. But I'll keep that a surprise for now.

Thanks guys!

Everything on that rack is solid. The Rotopax mounts are extremely secure. All the products from that company are high-quality (and a little pricey, but you get what you pay for). And they're made right here in the YOO-nited STATES of 'MERICUH.

...said the guy who drives the Nissan.

Only part of the profit goes to Japan. Engine and transmissions are US built with domestic components. Some electrical components are domestic and other components are made by US companies that have manufacturing facilities in North America. Lots of money stays here in this great country and creates lots of jobs.

This reminds me of the irony I experienced the other day. Changed my fuel filter and saw "Made in America" I was like "Schweeet! Sure enough I pulled the new one out of the box from Autozone to see "Made in China" I muddered "Damnit...". I argue this constantly with people, though. It's not Chevy,Dodge,Ford,Jeep so it's "Jap-Sh*t!" I just make sure to remind them when I pass them on the trail when they are burried in a hole that I trek right on through!

Aside from threadjacking, that rack looks solid, man! Kudos.

Um...I beg to differ, the point of a snorkel *is* for deep water crossing, so that you don't suck water in through the intake, it's added benefit is the real CAI, but, that's why the same part in the military H1 is called a "deep water fording kit" but the civilian description of the part is "snorkel"

Sharp looking rig, keep up the badassery sir.

No no no, I think Dave meant "water that deep" as in up to the hood where most snorkel heads reside.

That's how I took it, anyway. And that's what most people think. "LOL YOU'RE GOING TO DRIVE IN WATER UP TO YOUR ROOF?"

What Dave is saying is that you go into deep water you have other issues, like frying the electric system, starter, alternator, distributor,ecu.. Etc

Got some goodies in the last week:

2 of 4 Hellas arrived.

D-ring isolators.

And this beautiful, beastly Hi-Lift.

And of course, we had to celebrate International Star Wars Day over the weekend.

You and Tim are terrible influences, you know that?

I'm almost done with my goals for the year. After the lights are wired up and I get bumpers, I'm DONE.

...until next year when I do the SL and get 32's. Then maybe, just MAYBE, you can convince me that I need a BL and 33's.

Just keep in mind...this is an expedition rig. Not a BEAST like your truck ;)

/Seriously, that thing would eat me for breakfast.

I've gotta say, I'd stay at 32's, if you can do 32's with no trimming or BL, go there. I only run 32's on my 2nd gen and I'm (mostly) hanging with jeeps on 35's...
