Weird Noise on early acceleration

I checked the two heat shields and they are intact. I was reading on other threads, but can't seem to find if there is a third heat shield? :(

I think that ring falls off after a while...that was the first thing I ever did to my X the day I brought it home. Dad heard it rattle when I pulled in his driveway...60 seconds and bolt cutters later, no more rattle!

Hmm, may have to look into it! Might knock it out if it ever decides to warm up again!

EDIT: So, an update. We found a hangar screwed in wrong, so we fixed that. Also, the heat ring for the CAT, we took that off. Now the sound is still there. I'm thinking some kind of internal wiring got loose?

Here's an update:

It sounds like it's coming from the right side of the engine (passenger side). I checked the battery plates and they're tight. I also checked the heat shields which look fine. I can't figure this out... :(

See the shield?

I'm touching it and it has some play to it (wiggles a bit). That's normal, right? Also checking the heat shields below, everything still looks intact.

Give us a description of the sound. It can still be the catalytic converter from what I've heard.

Sounds like metal on metal/ electric shaver tone. Happens on early acceleration when going slow. After about 30+ mph it goes away. Doesn't happen when idle. And doesn't happen when revving the engine in a static position.

I get similar symptoms on my '02 Wrangler and I just threw a P0420 code (related).

I'm going to have to look into tightening the clamps down. Other Xers are saying that even though it may look intact, it could still be loose.

I have something similar to this right now. where exactly is that ring located on the cat converter? I'm going to check this out tomorrow. have you fixed yours yet?

Just fixed mine about 2 weeks ago. Assuming that it is your heat shield. Does it sound like an electric shaver/low buzzing noise at early RPMs? If so, read on...

-Check on the bottom of your X and find the two CATS.

-Depending on where the sound is coming from (when you drive, idle, etc.) knock around the piping of the CATS that lead into the engine with a screw driver, but nothing that will do a crazy amount of damage.

-You'll hear various sounds, but you want to hear short "tin-like" punctual sounds, not hollow like most (compare the two).

-With the "tin-like" area found, look to see if there's any metal running close. This can be caused by rusting, or poor welding, or both!

-With the screwdriver/tool, narrow it out! :)

NOTES:
-It won't be floppy or anything. It will have sturdiness to it. What may seem intact, won't be intact! Sound is key.
-Everyone just takes theirs off. I'm a firm believer that if something is on there for a reason, just leave it and fix. It's a very simple fix. Eventually, I can see myself in the future taking it off because of how bad Nissan is with this problem.

Hoped this helped. Everyone on all the forums really didn't give me a direction on how to do so. Just "Take off the heat shield".
