Transfer Case replacement

I am going to take my transfer case out of my 2000 xterra. As show on my other post in this section the TC is making some weird noises. I read somewhere here that a pathy TC is better in that the chain is wider? If so what year of pathfinder would work in my truck. If so how hard would it be to make it fit? Thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

So I deleted my first post here because the more research I did, the more I realized there was plenty of stuff about transfer cases that I was unaware of. I can say that 1986-2001 Pathfinders used the TX10, and that 2001+ Pathfinders used the TX14.

What I didn't realize was that even though they use the same model number, there are a number of differences between an early TX10 and a late TX10. I did find one guy saying that older TX10's are the ones that use the wider chains, but he didn't say specifically what year(s).

EDIT: The spline count will be different depending on the engine the case was paired with. A case from a 4 banger Pathy will have a lower spline count than one from a V6 Pathy. You should just have to match your engine to the one the case was paired with, and I'm assuming your truck is a V6.

The selector sensor is in a different location also but if you split the case you can swap them, the shift linkage is also different

A look at a pathfinder chain.

I got mine from a 94 pathfinder. Its pretty much the same case just wider chain. The 4wd shift indicatior switch is in a different location on the box. The Xterra box has a nub on a shift fork that bumps a switch. The pathfinder case doesn't have that nub so the Xterra indicator switch won't be bumped. I needed to create a new shift linkage do to the levers on the cases being different but that was fairly easy.

Any V6 TX10 will work you'll prefer a 94+ unit, they switched from a cable-driven speed sensor to an electronic one then. The switch to the narrower/weaker chain was mid 2001, so try and get one before then.

Try and match manual/automatic, they have a oil gutter at the transfer case input that differs between auto and manual.

Best bet would probably be a 96-01 Pathfinder, or 98-00 Frontier, or of course another 00 Xterra.

You could also talk to Bandit4X4, they sell t-cases ready to go with lower low range gears, you give them your old one in exchange IIRC.

You could also order the lower t-case low range gears from AC (Calmini lists them, but never has them), and while its open, get ~ 3.7:1 instead of 2:1 for example.

Wow what awesome info. So much to digest! Thanks guys. I think I might as well put am older one in makes sense. Mine is so bad it won't come out of 4wd unless I drive backwards 3-4 feet. My truck is year 2000, V6, automatic.
