Didnt really know where else to post this, but im looking for aftermarket tow hooks., basically like where do i mount the. i would like 4. 2 on the front bumper and 2 on the rear bumper. like the d ring type. i just dont know where these can mount to without bending the frame or rear bumper when attempting a recovery.

Being a 2nd gen guy idk what's different but I'm sure someone like rattfink could possibly help you out here, he didn't always have an arb up front

For the rear, it is almost easier to build a new rear bumper that is strong enough to do what you want. If you just use a piece of 3/8 plate with a hole in it that you can attach to the frame, and extend it through the rear bumper it would give a strong enough spot to attach a shackle to. You would want to find a way to brace the two ends of the frame together as to spread the load, and help keep the truck from racking, or twisting.

I would use shackles and tabs instead of the perm, mounted rings. Rings like that are noisey and you need to use a shackle to attach to them anyway.

You can also just bolt a tow hook with strap retainer to the bottom of the back rails to accomplish the same goal.

For the front you can use the factory locations to mount hooks to.

I have seen people mount the weld on rings to the cross member that is behind the bumper cover, but that is not something that I would recommend. That cross member is the actual bumper, and it is only held on with two bolts at the end of the frame horns. And the ends of the horns are at the end of a crumple zone. If you give that cross member a good yank it will bend and take the ends of the frame horns with it.

Its tough to mount tow hooks on first gens bc the factory bumpers have zero strength. I help a guy with the 3/8ths plate going through the rear bumper& it looks & works descent. As for the front you basically screwed until you switch bumpers bc the factory spot is the only place to mount a hook & its under the the frame.

For the front, just use the universal 3 hole hooks (not the 2 hole) you can find at any off road shop, there are holes on the bottom of the frame rails towards the front, the passenger side (iirc) is threaded for the stock hook, the drivers side you need nuts and bolts and some fanagling to get them into the frame.

I was having the same issue last year - just couldn't come up with anything. But I finally got the three-hole hooks and trying to bolt them on was a PITA for some reason, so we just ended up welded them to that spot :)

FYI I dont know how sturdy that bar that bolts on is, the one running across the front frame horns. It has 2 bolts and I trashed it when installing my winch. I dont know it thats what you welded them to or not.

even welding them to the frame I would still box in the horns prior to the tow hooks going on. They are going on the weakest part of the frame by design,
