I am way overdue for a new timing belt... Does anyone know how much it would cost if I took it into the nissan dealer to get it replaced? or is it something that I might be able to do myself?

I did it myself on my '02 xterra it toox around 10 hours, but I was going slow and making sure I did it right.
It will probably cost at least $700 to have a shop do it for you, or $250ish for the parts to do it yourself.

I am not a very skilled guy when it comes to mechanics. I know the basics but I heard the timing belt is hard to get to?

It is NOT for beginners. If you mess it up, you could ruin the entire motor. How many miles are on your truck?

I am very novice when it comes to auto mechanics, but I am also very detailed and do my homework. I printed the FSM and read over the How to probably 20 times before starting. I also had any tool I needed in my dad's shop, and his advise if I had a question. I did everything by myself in a weekend. I've put about 10k miles on it since with. O issues. That being said, if you don't feel comfortable doing it, take it to a shop. It's not something you want to mess up.

I think I have around 160,000 miles on her, but I got her used and she only had 130,000 miles back then. Is there a way to check and see if the previous owner already changed my timing belt?

You can try a VIN search at the original dealership. Anything that a Nissan dealer did will be archived by the VIN.

They are not to bad to do at home, the tools that you need are pretty easy to come by. you will need a harmonic balancer puller, or a steering wheel puller.
The steering wheel puller needs a custom part to press it off. I made mine out of a stack of washers, welded together to form a cone like the harmonic puller comes with.

You will also need a pair of 6mm bolts about 3 inches long to bolt the puller to the pulley.

if they had it changed at the dealer, look for a sticker on the under side of the hood or the core support. it will have the date that it was changed.

I did mine... 2 times. Second time it was easier. I think you need a 24mm socket for the Harmonic balancer bolt I know it's in the 20's. I'll tell you like I tell everyone, You can do it. It just takes time and patience. With the FSM which has a step by step how to in it I believe anyone can do it. Hardest part to me was keeping the cam and crank shafts together on TDC. It took me longer than 10 hours cause I went really slow and took my time over a few days. GO FOR IT...YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Did it twice first time took 8 hours second time knocked it out in a hour. Air tools speed the process big time. Lots of little cover screws. Don't be to afraid its just nuts and bolts. There is a pretty good write up on here I think some place. Might be worth reviewing to aware yourself of what needs to be done.

I think the harmonic balancer but is 27mm. It is a lot of work but doable. Just read the how-tos and the FsM and see if it makes sense. Good luck!
