Running NEW Wires In Dash

Don't really know what sub-forum to put this...

Has anyone installed guages or switches on top of the dash and ran the wiring through? I'm thinking if it's possible to install a few switches and a code reader up there. Along with my ol' skool CB but want the wires inside.

Thoughts good/bad?

Where exactly on top of the dash? Like, on top top, where the red and blue arrows are?

I can say that there's a decent amount of room underneath the dash cover in the area of the blue arrow, but it's also directly above the HVAC vents (not a big deal, just keep your wiring away if you're worried about the temperature). Based on the amount of my dash that I've had taken apart (not much more than what you see in the pic) I can say that there isn't a ton of room underneath the dash cover in the area of the red arrow, but there is enough to run a couple wires.

I'd say it would be easiest to do if you could remove the entire upper section of the dash cover, as there's just not a whole ton of room to stick your hands/tools when the cover is still in the truck. I ran the wiring for my overhead lights to the front section of the dash, to the right of the cigarette lighter plug, and there was plenty of room back there to run lots of wires. The only things you'll really need to avoid interfering with are the HVAC vents/controls and the passenger-side air bag, which takes up a big chunk of real estate on that side...which I assume is fine, 'cause who wants to look at a gauge/reach for a switch that's all the way over there?

Actually, I wanted to run wires in both locations. Red for light switches and a Code reader, and blue for the CB cable and power supply wires. Just didn't know how much room there was up in there. By the way, your dash at the RED arrow is more curved than mine...hope that means more room for me...lol

I know Snick took off the whole thing to replace her heater core. Wonder if it's worth taking it completely out to run the wiring. Hmmmm.

Ah, gotcha. I'd say you should have plenty of room then. You could always try fishing the wires through with stiff wires, strings, bent up pieces of wire coat hanger, etc. but I think that'd be more of a PITA...it all depends on how hard it is to take out the dash cover I guess. Yeah, Snickerdoodle just had hers out recently, good call; I forgot about her heater core replacement.

And yes, my X is an '04 so it's got the curvy bit there above the gauge cluster. The rest of our interiors are pretty much the same I think...here's a shot of mine with the trim back in place:
