Offroad Bumper options

I am looking at purchasing a bumper from Smitybuilt or OR-FAB and then modify it to make it work on the Xterra. The reason I want to do this is because pre-made bumpers for xterra's are way over priced. A Smittybuilt SCR runs for about $250 or the OR-FAB around $500. An arb or rugged rocks for xterra is around $900+. With the xterra width at about 74" finding one to fit can be challenging. Has anyone on this forum done this? Modifying another bumper is easy to do and can look good when done right.

Xterror04 has modified a Yota prerunner bumper onto his.

I'm sure you've researched this, but Smittybuilt (s***ybuilt as they're sometimes referred to) is the knock-off variation of popular brands such as Poison Spyder. Some owners have reported poor quality ranging from bad powder coating to total failure of safety components. I have a Smittybuilt stinger on my TJ and I like it, but have yet to use it for its practical purpose. Smittybuilt at least attempts to remedy their problems by adding additional gusseting.

That is interesting, usually everyone I talk to loves Smittybilt. Their prices are reasonable especially the winches. I ordered a "bumper" today and with slight mount modifications should look good. Pictures in a couple weeks on my build thread.

Don't get me wrong, they are cheap, but to a lot its a "you get what you pay for" kinda thing. Some of the "hardcore" wheelers argue that in the event of a nosedive, there isn't enough support on the stinger to support the forces against it, which causes it to buckle. If you're just getting a bumper, I'll be willing to bet you'll be fine.

The frame mount and winch plate will be designed such that it will bolt onto the truck and then bolt onto the new bumper. I will at all cost try to weld or cut into the new bumper if I can. For the price its a good deal. I like that the stinger is trussed in the back and actually looks beefy. Well see how it goes.

For winches not sure what to go with. Its between an Smittybilt XRC9,5, warn or a Engo winch. Synthetic or steel rope. I have never owned a winch and they say to go steel to learn then synthetic rope.

Wasn't there a guy over on CX that used jeep front and rear bumpers on his X? I know it was a black 1.5 gen and he lived in the North East Region
